[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYdkP3iOhjU[/ame] Tim Tomashek clowning, doing a muhammad ali, he even trys to jab the ref haha this guy was great.
He wasn't even supposed to be the opponent that night. Tomashek was in the audience with his buddies, whom had taken him out to the fights for his birthday celebration. In the interview after the fight (which remains to this day the funniest, coolest postfight interview I've ever heard) Tomashek says he was approached in the crowd by the promoter's people because Mike Williams, the originl opponent for Morrison, pulled out of the fight at the last second. He said "Sure!" And the hilarity ensued. Watch the postfight interview if it's available. Tomashek was a funny guy.
Two things: 1- He wasn't bad at all... Much better than I would expect from some guy from the crowd. He obviously had plenty of experience. He was a good sport and just happy to be there. 2- This really says a lot about the credibility of these alphabet organizations. A title fight with some guy from the crowd... What would have happened if this 35-10 (or whatever his record was) beat Morisson? What an opportunity though. That guy had some serious balls and a great sense of humor...
I remember Tomashek. He was so funny and such a breath of fresh air that he even got on some late night shows as a result, like Letterman or Carson or something like that. Seemed as if the referee and the doctor were doing everything they could to help out Morrison, who didn't look like a champion type fighter in this one.
I always got the impression that Morrison was upset both at being upstaged by Tomashek in terms of raw theater and because the shenanigans left him playing the hapless straight man and being made to feel foolish.
It was for the WBO World championship belt. Tim Tomoshek put on a great show. He didn't win a round, but I think his manner disturbed Morrison. A durable guy, he was only stopped 3 times outside of Morrison. Tomoshek once fought Jerry " wimpy " Halstead, another colorful journeyman, and lost via SD. " Whimpy" was in demand as an opponent in the early 1990's. Many punchers were fought. Wimmpy's quality of opposition was actually excellent.
Tomashek was very much an underrated and solid journeyman who trained much harder and studiously than his appearance would suggest. Ironic that Wimpy got mentioned in the same thread. Both got guest shots on David Letterman. Wimpy made sure to say some suggestive stuff (Asked Letterman to "come out of the closet") and got yanked quick. Tomashek was much more host and audience friendly..
might have been a laugh riot id tim had fought tex cobb! Tim was a great guy and a good fighter. He mentioned in the interview that he had known the whole Morrison family very well, I don't think Tommy had any problem being upstaged by Tim
