Sharkey had not fought for 2 years and would never fight again, he was well past his sell by date! Maher had won just 1 of his last 7 fights ,that on a dsq over welterweight Joe Grim .The Human Punching Bag. Lets take a look at Munroe's victims. Shaughnessy. 0-0-0 Mulverhill.1-5-1 Stokes.0-0-0 Sullivan.0-0-0 Hayes. 23-15-4 he had won 1 of his last 8 , and 2 of his last 11! Stop being such a cherry-picking hack. Munore drew with Hank Griffin 1901. You know the same Hank Griffin who whipped Jack Johnson in 1901 and drew with him twice. I must ask you, can a man who you think had " tough man skills "do this? Please say yes, because that means Johnson is on the tough man level by your definition as Munroe was on par with the man who beat him. Munroe has a KO win over Maher and a points win over Sharkey, even if they were both past their bests their they are wins over name opponents. Like many fighters of his time, Munroe's professional record is incomplete. He was only stopped by Jeffries, so his chin must have been pretty sturdy.
I was discussing Munroes wins.I covered everyone of them no cherry picking on my part whatsoever! If you think any part of the records of Munroe's victims is incorrect please produce evidence to the contrary! Sharkey had not fought for 2 years and he was seriously washed up when he was beaten up and stopped in his last fight byRuhlin! Maher had won just 1 of his last7 fights ,over the pathetic punchbag welterweight Joe Grim and that was on a DSQ! Point out the innacuracies in the last statement! Who say's Munroe's record is incomplete? You? It might interest you to know Pollack as the Munroe v Griffin fight as a win for Griffin .Source page 374 Jack Johnson The Rise. NB Johnson floored Munroe in the 2nd rd and did not try and stop him until the crowd began to get restive at his lack of effortMunore held at every opportunity just being content to last the 6 rdsHe finished with cuts above the right eye and on the cheek bone. The Philadelphia Record said Johnsons made punching bag of Munroe. The Philadelphia Public Record said Johnson outclassed Munroe and did not try to stop him and the crowd knew it. The Public Ledger said Johnson could hit Munroe whenever he wanted and it was obvious he was holding back. The Philadelphia Inquirer said," the fact that Munroe had once lasted 4 rds with Jeffries and had outpointed Sharkey caused some to believe he at least had a look in with the worlds best. However the Johnson bout had exploded that thinking. At no point in the 6 rounds did Munroe justify the belief that he was more than an ordinary husky fighter endowed by nature with a large physique, but lacking the essentials which would make him even a second rater.Munroe was entirely too bulky and his own feet were in his way" The Police Gazette said,Munroe lasted the 6 rounds but for the last three was at Johnson's mercy and it seemed the big Black was under a pull, for he did not cut loose several timeswhenhe had spendid chances to stop his opponent. Another writer in the Gazette wrote,"lthough Johnson failed to stop Munroe,he licked him without much effort, and the miner was left almost unrecognizable to his friends". There are plenty more ringside accounts in Pollack's book confirming these I've posted.but these amply demonstrate the level Munroe was at! TOUGH MAN LEVEL! I could have quoted all the newspapers that said Munroe dropped Jeffries but, unlike you I am honest ,and don't believe he did! Johnson is a top ten AT G heavyweight imo Munroe isnt top100 ,or do you also dispute that too?
In the Ring With James J. Jeffries cites the local newspaper reports by those who actually were there and saw the exhibition.
