I would guess Monzon by decision. I remember watching him back in the day. Before every fight, he seemed beatable to me. Then he'd go out and prove me wrong. Hearns, though, was an outstanding boxer when he wanted to be. He would have a decent chance against Monzon if he didn't worry about the KO. But I still say Monzon.

 

We have seen Hearns wear down over the course of fights. I just think the speed disparity is gonna be tough mountain for Monzon considering he doesn't have his usual advantages of height he won't be in control. If he is able to force Carlos back I think he will be able to control the pace. Perhaps resting a round or two behind his lethal jab. Hearns has put those boxing skills to good use on the way up to 175lbs. We have seen him tame some good lightheavies even. I believe Tommy would be able to see Monzon's punches coming, read him in a sense.
I can't disagree with you that Hearns could get caught, we have seen it happen. As you know this isnt the typical smaller boxer moving, maybe a bit shopworn that Carlos faced during his exceptional title reign.

It would be a good fight. Carlos Monzon fought hi whole career at 160 lbs, he was tall for his weight, 5"11 and a half. His record was 89-3-9, 61 knockouts, he had not lost in 82 fight dating back to 1964. He had never been knocked out, or stopped. He was only knocked off of his feet once, by Rodrigo Valdes on July 30 1977, his final fight. He retired as champion after 14 title defenses, 7 years. Thomas Hearns won the WBA welterwight title on Aug 2 1980 with a brutal ko 2 of Jose Pipino Cuevas. He defeated the likes of Wilfred Benitez, Virgil Hill, and Robert Duran, who he knocked out in 2 rounds. He suffered knockout defeats to Barkley, Hagler, and Leonard. Monzon will give up rounds due to Hearn's foot speed and long left jab. Monzon would be countering when possible, but the accumilation of punches and attrition will wear down Tommy. The end for Thomas will happen in round 13, as he gets hit by a Monzon right hand and goes down, he rises and continues to be rained on by Carlos's combos, the referee stops the fight. Carlos will say that Hearns was a very brave and tough fighter.

Probably an overstatement but I do like the style matchup in this one for Hearns. Not that he was so far above Monzon.

 

You may be right but Carlos revenged his three defeats by decision, and defeated 8 of the 9 men he drew with. I did read that he was decked in 1966 by Jorge Fernandez, in a South American title fight, in which Carlos won on points. I do not know about Felipe Cambiero in 1964, but a points loss for Monzon. You might be right. I know the other fighters who defeated him on points were, Antonio Augilar and Alberto Massi in 1964.

 

Very similar fighting style, both utilized range so that would give hearns the edge, hearns was also faster, hit harder and was a more explosive fighter in general, had better movement, and fought tougher opposition.

Monzon had a much better chin, was more patient, had a dynamic uppercut that could definitely catch hearns off guard at some point.

There styles were almost identical besides one big area and that is the jab, monzon had a power jab that he used to deal damage and break down his opponent while hearns had a whip like flicker jab that he used to disrupt his opponent and set up his right cross.

If I had to bet on one, I'd go with hearns by a very small margin

 

Monzon is the only fighter 147-160 who could out jabs Hearns and when he does Hearns will get desperate and run in to something. Monzon stops him inside of 10. I have trouble seeing Hearns win more than 1 or 2 rounds while it last.

 

Hearns couldn't get past Iran Barkley, yet you got people here picking him over Monzon in a 15 rounder.... Tommy had a stamina problem and a chin made of china... even the over the hill comebacking Leonard had him reeling around in the ring in the rematch. Had that been a 15 rounder, there would have been no draw and he would have been KO'ed in that one too....
