Did it ever occur to you that these big men you speak of that Dempsey beat just weren't that good? Do you think Jess Willard would be competitive against the top guys from the 20 or 30 years? I love Dempsey for what he accomplished in his era but boxing has evolved. Dempsey was to small of a man to deal with a big skilled heavyweight like a Lennox Lewis.

This. Especially with all of the titles available at heavyweight nowadays I can think of many others that would definitely pickup a strap.

Dempsey and possibly Langford would be my only candidates.I have reservations about Langford because he was badly found out against Fulton and his long jab.Dempsey because he was elusive ,and so quick into range would be my first choice.

Probably none. Not as they actually were. Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, Tyson, Lewis, Bowe etc etc aren't losing to someone weighing that low. Might lose some rounds or even occasionally be in some trouble but the outcomes are the same.
Rocky/Dempsey could have some success I guess but I wouldn't know how to argue how they go about beating Tyson or Bowe for example.

Major success? Dempsey, and Dempsey only.

Limited success against the right opponents at the right time:
    - Tunney
    - Langford
    - Schmeling
    - Conn
    - Patterson
    - Charles

James Toney of the Jirov bout would be competitive.

Dempsey was exposed by John Lester Johnson and retreated to safer waters. I don't believe he could deal with the complexion of the modern heavies.

I'd hazard a guess he was a lttle short of his prime then, having celebrated his 21st birthday a month earlier.

The Salt lake Tribune reported: "Jack Dempsey, the Salt Lake heavyweight, who has been causing such a stir among New York fans since he left here recently, last night won by a big shade over John Lester Johnson, one of the toughest negro fighters in New York. In their ten-round bout before the Harlem Sporting club, according to a telegram received by Dempsey's manager, Jack Price." On top of that he'd also fought a 10 rounder 6 days before. As a matter of fact he'd fought 6 times in the span of 2 months. You're grasping at straws here!

Not Rocky Marciano, Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey, Sam Langford or any other fighter from the 50s or before. You saw what happened when a guy like Bob Foster tried to fight even smaller modern sized heavyweights like Joe Frazier. He was destroyed, even though Foster was 6'3 and had skills. The odds of a fighter weighing less than 190 pound and being shorter than 6'0 beating a modern sized heavyweight is slim. A guy who is 6'2 plus and 190 pounds could move up to heavyweight if he has amazing speed or technique. But for the most part it would only work against certain modern heavyweights.

I’d say Patterson did quite well from the 50s and if he could do well no reason the others couldn’t in their respective primes
