First of all, Chuvalo looks absolutely lethal here. Brave Ramos takes a beating, but was this worthy of quite that celebration? He certainly didn’t wait to see if the Mexican was okay. Has anyone seen this fight? This content is protected

At least George didn't spit on him or anything....he was just happy to win, that's all...this happens all the time.
Yes I understand that. Usually when a lot more is at stake than that surely. What I mean was, I have Never seen quite those moves before, that was some celebratory dance. Head banging too. He put some serious energy into it. Like he had been promised a team of bunny girls or something.
Nothing wrong with that. It was a big win for George leading to bigger money fights and he was happy. Never seen this one before, didn't think it was out there. Maybe there is hope for Quarry-Mathis after all
Im of the opinion the second a fight is over I want to make sure my opponent is ok. After all its a job..a profession.. its nothing personal the way too many guys look at it today. Those stupid extra long stare downs at weigh ins today only fuels these things. BTW i absolutely despise when these UFC fighters knock a guy out cold then try an get as many hard shots in on a fighter thats out befor the ref gets in then jump around like they hit Powerball. Matter of fact i preffer the calm cool proffesional attitude ala Joe Louis. And yes i know Joe was told to act that way but i still liked it.
I never saw this one before either. Regarding the 'disproportionate celebration', I think i know the reason for that. Despite having some 60 plus fights in the bank, George really never beat many top 10 rated contenders. To my reckoning, this was like the 3rd time he beat a rated fighter, so it's understood why he was ecstatic. He got where he did by fighting very often. Not saying anything disparaging about his talent level - I loved watching him here going to the body and head and always a terrific finisher - but he happened to be fighting in a very tough era and indeed, fought every one of them.
Precisely. I like the joe Louis approach. Even if it’s bullsh!t. It just makes boxing look more like a profession that way. It’s not personal. As in war, We all know just how much absolute ruthlessness is required to put a man down. But once that’s done, it’s time to prove how honourable you can be in victory. professionalism is only shown if the stricken opponent is first respected. After that, once you are safe, celebrate how the hell you like.
If George had better hand speed he would have been a very difficult opponent to beat. All the higher echelon hwts were able to outspeed him.

Chuvalo was a great man outside the ring, but he was a ******* when he was in fight mode, I've thought that since seeing his fight with Patterson, he tried to pull a liston at the faceoff then hit Patterson behind the head multiple times, Patterson in a show of sportsmanship tried to touch gloves with him after the foul and chuvalo refused and continued to come after him. Dont get me wrong I love chuvalo but he did have a mean side.
I remember that fight and was surprised to learn that Chuvalo had won. Ramos was viewed as a rising star - he had outpointed Ernie Terrell and sent him into retirement. He was stopped in two rounds by Joe Frazier, but had shown impressive punching skill in that fight, rocking Joe once or twice. He was still seen as an up-and-comer. Chuvalo, always tough and durable, was turning into a gatekeeper type of contender - one who lost to the elite heavies but could be a stern test for a rising contender or top contender rebounding from a loss. He was in this role against Ramos as he would be the following year against the comebacking Buster Mathis and Jerry Quarry. For this fight, I had expected Ramos to win a decision and find himself back in contention. Instead he was virtually through and Chuvalo was the one with new life in his career.
Maybe, but then George would have only one eye remaining and be sipping gruel out of straw before he hit 45.
I noticed that bad sportsmanship of GC's after the Patterson fight...first fight I ever saw on tv BTW. I was all for Patterson all the way.
The guy was nasty in the ring. Even for pro boxing. George was not in it to make friends. He was tough all the way through. He showed a real ruthless streak against Dejohn too, where he pounded on him when mike was through the ropes and not really in a position to defend himself. That was a bad tempered fight and the referee was terrible.
