As the champ , Did Big George Foreman not have a rematch clause in the contract for the Zaire fight ?
BGF chased a rematch in '76 but just wondered if there was a rematch clause in the original contract? And if so , why didnt it get implemented?

Don't know if there was a clause ,,,but it wouldn't have mattered, George was mentally a mess after his loss

Rematch clauses were outlawed for a time because In the 1950s and 1960s it had become ridiculous. A guy had to beat a champion twice to become champion..Wallcot had to rematch Charles. Marciano had to rematch Walcott. Ingo had to rematch Floyd. Liston had to rematch Floyd. Ali had to rematch Liston... when it was an undisputed title and the championship was only fought once a year it just meant too few people contested for the title. Ingo, Liston Patterson And Ali tied the title up for years with their rematches.

So I don’t think rematch clauses were even allowed anymore when Foreman Fought Ali. The rematch clause phenomenon has come back into vogue gradually because with so many alphabet belts available at least there are options for contenders waiting in line now. That was probably the downside of an undisputed title.

Good answer as always Chokky .. I dont think they should have the clause but I just wondered.. its surprising what goes through your mind whilst you're 300 feet up in the air surveying a hotel roof.
