Should pros be allowed to fight amateurs? What is the point in having amateur fights then?

Legalized bullying....yet the "victims" win against the bullies more often than not. Makes sense.

Point of the amateurs? To fight the best, to box for the love of the sport (so intrinsic motivation, that creates mastery), to really earn your spot and achievements, to bring glory to your country, to be undisputed every time you win a World Championship/Olympics.
If paid fighters who are conditioned to fighting bums at a slower pace want to join in then good luck to them, they’ll need it.

Isn’t there a rule that they have to essentially retire first to fight in the Ams?
Or maybe it applies only to the olympics? Katsunari Takayama, a Japanese fighter basically retired himself for him to be able to participate in the olympics. Not sure if it’s the same for the amateurs.

And what about Cubans who stay amateur for 20 years and beat up 19 year olds?

    It's boxing Mark.

I don't think any of the pro fighters who have came back to the amateurs for the Olympics etc.have had any success or won any medals against there amateur opponents, since they changed the rules so no idea what this thread is about

I don't see anything wrong. First of all yes pros are allowed to participate in tournaments like World Cups and Olympic Games. Tell me how many pros participated at the last Olympics and how many of them did anything notable? If I remember right, no one even went past through the 1/8 or 1/4 finals. In fact the professionals are getting bullied there, because all the professional fighters start training for endurance and need to last a 12 round fight. It doesn't matter that they were once amateurs... Once you turn pro, everything is different. You need to be extremely good and confident to win a medal if you are a pro. It's all about points and to show your best in three rounds. The instinct that you build as a pro to protect yourself and keep your stamina cannot be skipped. Everyone has seen fights were fighters gas out and then recover for a round or two. Well if you gas out @ am's you are basically ****ed up.

It`s not just that, amateurs are too green to fight elite pros, they haven`t learned enough yet.

Could you imagine anyone in the P4P top 10 in the olympics? It would be a slaughter, they are too green at that stage and don`t have enough experience just fighting 3 rounders.

It`s not that age, it`s the experiance and savvy gap.

They are not fighting the best, the point of the amateurs is to start learning getting you ready for the pro`s, a fighter can`t win olympic gold and just fight for a world title because he has to get experience first, the only fighter that could have done that was Loma, look whatt happened to an olympic gold medalist when he took on Floyd Paterson for his world title, he was destroyed.
