The power of Ali's mystique was so much that many people thought he could win.
Holmes was only a narrow favourite.

Elected not to go; it just wasn't in the cards; I knew Muhammad had nothing to offer....

Understand Ali had made all the critics eat crow when he beat Liston and Foreman when everyone and their brother thought he be murdered. Leading up to Holmes some saw Ali looking physically in incredible shape. Slim and trim and came to the conclusion he was going to do it again. Of course they were wrong as Ali entered the ring not only a shot fighter but a very sick man.

You mean you were wrong but you just can’t admit it.

My granddad said that he thought Liston would pummel Ali into the canvas. He just couldn't see Ali winning.

My dad, who was in high school at the time, lost a five dollar bet with one of his classmates when he betted on George Foreman over Ali.

Yeah but it works both ways. How many people had Neon Leon, a novice of 8 fights beating Ali? Weren’t around personally at the time but surely that was just as big an upset when it happened as when Ali beat Liston and Foreman?

Ali goes out on his shield. The way it should be done. Much respect.
