Why does boxing fetishize its past so much?

I think some would struggle much more with the transition for stylistic reasons, but broadly I agree.

I dont agree at all. Just go back to some recent decades 80's 70's and those guys take the majority of the fights when pitted against the decades moving forward IMO

I don't see anyone talking about how Mayweather would be nothing in the era of Dutch Sam or Tom Sayers, and few fantasy fights with bareknuckle guys, it's mostly just historical interest.

So you consider Andre Ward to be a top 100 P4P fighter ever?

At one point in the 40's SRR and Gavilan were the top 2. How do you see Floyd going against those two?

    Agreed.
I'm not that big of a fan of mythical match up, but will participate until some actually argue like they really know the outcome.

Plus, we can only do so many threads on current boxers LOL!

But as Red Cobra stated, this goes for any sport involving old people. 2 of My coworkers do the same about baseball.

When I go to my shrink (the barber shop on Saturdays where a lot of men talk sports, women etc, there is always some old dudes telling the younger...Lebron James is good, but he aint got nothing on Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Irving.

Same with American football, "Oh. Tom Brady of the Patriots wouldn't compare to Jonny Unitas, Bart Star. Back in my day , Jim Brown played every game, never got hurt, now these muscle bound wimps get injured during pre-season."

I can envision a 65 year old Zulawski telling his grand kids..."shoot, I guess You never heard of Manny Pacquiao then, huh?! Back in my day, they moved up as many as 8 weight classes, today they just"...:D

This is the 'Classic' forum, it would be a bit weird if those who posted here, did not have a fetish for past boxers...

Boxing is interesting because we'll never know how great a fighter is until his career is over.

well just think of all the great fighters from the last 100 years or so and how long people have watched their fights and been able to appreciate them and the word of mouth from people's grandfathers and great grandfathers who watched them live waxing lyrical about them. Then you have...catchweight king mayweather, mayweather isn't top 50 nowhere near.
