I've thought of this recently. Box nation has t been successful as their was a lack of good fights on it. If the Matchroom stable for example and another couple top British fighters were on a DAZN type platform in UK I think they could after a few months get 200,000 or do subscribers (Joshua would need to be on it) then when he thought they would get a huge boost. Might not be the best league in the world but Scottush football rights is cheap, if you showed the old firm every week you would get a further big increase in subscriber numbers. EPL rights is biggest driver but if One of big broadcasters ignored it and bought all the other best sporting rights I think they would do well. Imagine for £19.99 a month if you could get both codes of rugby's club competitions, international golf, best horse racing, cricket, scottish football, champions league, Spanish, German and Italian football and DAZN US level boxing cards with mainly British and Irish fighters.
No one really wants the Scotish football though, they want the Champions League and Primier League that's where the real money is but if you sold that for £20 a month, you'd be bankrupt within two years as your break even point would ridiculously high and you'd need millions of subscribers No one wants the international football that's why Premier Sports have got it and BT picked up Bundesliga and Ligue UN for peanuts, as no-one cares about it, people are massive over valuing this markets espically in a releative small country like England
Sky have got the SPFL exclusively once the current sharing deal with BT Sport comes to an end at the end of the season. Scottish football isn't going anywhere else for a long time.
I was in Italy a couple of weeks ago and noticed DAZN show the serie A. I know the premier league is a different kettle of fish but it's the same concept. I imagine if their targets are hit DAZN will absolutely go for the premier league in England.
Unless it’s secondary rights that won’t sell by themselves no chance in hell does a streaming platform buy the premier league rights never mind champions league rights on top and sell for £10 a month. ‘And in terms of just boxing they would not get anywhere near 200,000 subs even with peak popularity Joshua, it would be like when Boxnation had Haye v Chisora, the casual Joshua fans would sign up for a month and cancel immediately, if they tried the 12 month minimum that same lot of casuals would watch by other means, they would get peak Boxnation numbers at best.
More likely we get a sky version of Dazn with pan euro rights to sports as Sky is now in a fair few markets now. Dazn would need to spend billions to get football rights in a small market like the uk population wise. Not worth it to them.
It's not implausible, Amazon Prime are showing 20 Premier league games in December for the first time, so it might not just be Sky and BT PL monopoly in the future. From a boxing point of view, however, I can't see it happening with Matchroom/Sky being in such a strong position in the UK, they pretty much have the domestic scene to themselves and I don't think this will change for a while, but you never know.
The business model works on global subscriber numbers very much like Netflix who now have enough money to take on Hollywood. 20 million global subscribers paying on average £10 a month is a tidy revenue then add in advertising and you talking in B's not M's for yearly figures all of which can be re-invested in content/original content. It's a steep gradient.
There's questions over whether even long term Netflix is even profitable, as the subscriber count has to remain incredibly high and with Disney and others going their own way it will move market share there and take content off netflix. Amazon video/prime is almost unique as it's part of a package, almost tying you into the Amazon ecosphere One for certain is once the older generation dies off, IPTV will shoot through the roof even more than it has done
They won't release figures and when they do it's phrased as 4 million subscribers, that doesn't tell you how many are active, ie they'll probably get thousands of kids sign up for that KSI fight and then cancel Rough estimating they are pulling in four hundred eighty million a year if they have 4 million subscribers for 12 months a year, but DAZN Group’s total rights commitments beyond as of April 2019 are US$6.1 billion, so there is no profit it at all, that's without all the other money in marketing, staff, up keep of the apps, website and god knows what else. It's not a viable model for profit and never will be, same as spotify
Wouldn’t cover costs in the UK as yet. 200,000 subs even at £19.99 a month which is ambitious would generate £48m when AJ takes home close to £20m a fight alone and the likes of Dillon’s Whyte £2/3m you wouldn’t get much change to pay for anything else.
