Has a fighter of note ever existed who did not ever have a “close” or “controversial” victory...or loss.
Not as far as I know. That he only have two controversial wins (and is the Maidana win really controversial or just a grab by Floyd detractors?), and over substantially bigger top opponents to boot, really speaks in his favour if anything. EDIT: Not one of the ringside unofficial scorecards had Maidana according to Boxrec, so probably not really controversial: https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Floyd_Mayweather_Jr._vs._Marcos_Maidana
There are too many dark clouds over Floyds career for me. His IV Gate escapade was never investigated just covered up as well
I quite agree. I am not particularly a Floyd fan by any measure although in the past couple of years I have come to appreciate him. No Maidana is not controversial IMO...Castillo perhaps, but I had Floyd edging that as well. But I can see controversy in that decision if not the robbery some claim it to be.
Certainly not a robbery. And the Maidana only seem controversial here. No one around ringside had it for Maidana (see my edit of previous post). So one controversial win, that was clarified in a rematch, against a bigger top quality opponent...
