Cosell was the best boxing announcer, PERIOD. What excitement!! Frazier-Foreman!!! clark, Oct 10, 2007
Excellent blow by blow guy. Wasnt as knowledgeable as he wanted people to believe but never the less he was excellent
Don Dunphy called a fight like he was conducting an orchestra, rising crescendo during exciting moments and then almost muted at other times and let the fight speak for itself. I really notice how modern broadcasters can't have even a nanosecond of silence and have to fill almost all available airtime with meandering conversation and opinions. I would put Cossell in the same category as a Ferdie Pacheco, two know-it-all blowhards who loved putting themselves over more than the sport of boxing/boxers. They had their time I suppose, but I don't really miss them one bit. Guys I miss: Al Michaels, Gil Clancy, Don Dunphy, Alex Wallau, Reg Gutteridge, Tim Ryan, Dan Dierdorf, Nick Charles, Emmanuel Steward...these guys were knowledgeable and really loved boxing and it came across in their broadcasts. Underrated and should be used more: Sean O'Grady, Brian Kenny, Russ Anber Special Mention: Al Bernstein - like a lot of people I grew up watching him on Top Rank Boxing and I loved his fight calls and insight. He made so many mediocre fights interesting and he would often predict an upset or note some kind of adjustment a fighter made that was changing the course of the fight. Very knowledgeable without coming across as a know-it-all blowhard and gave me such an education on boxing. I know he's on Showtime but I miss his constant presence like when he was on ESPN. Knowledgeable but I don't love their broadcast style: Max Kellerman, Paulie Malignaggi, Teddy Atlas, Bob Sheridan
