A year or so ago Hearn said Dillion Whyte had to be on PPV because he wouldnt expect to fight for 400k !!! So you can see where Allen is coming from if thats the scale.... My attitude is well if Whyte wont fight for 400k then he dont fight at all...what else is he gonna do?...Same goes for Allen, who really cares if he fights again or not...I have only ever seen him in stinkfests
Probably because there's a number of factors which aren't typical for a fighter of his level/achievements. He's very personable and social media has allowed him to consequently build up a bigger following than would otherwise be the case. He's got a world class chin with an area level boxing ability. Not a typical combination in itself, but one which lends drama to his fights and makes a result like his Nick Webb win a possibility. All of which means he winds up fighting in places he has no right to be against guys who shouldn't be in the same ring. Which makes him the underdog that Brit fans in particular love to adopt and in turn brings the grim reality of boxing when it goes wrong to a head.
Allen needs to lose the ego and realise that he is now a step down for Dubois (who has already KO’d Gorman). He is deluded in calling out and making demands to a young fighter who has already succeeded him on every level. Dave Allen hasn’t even won an area title...
I don't blame Allen for making demands. We all know Frank won't stump up the cash so we can expect Dubois to be in with a few more African area champs before any remotely big tests. Dubois vs Ajagba needs to be made as well.
I love all the armchair google-fu brain docs concern trolling Allen on twitter. **** off and stop virtue signalling.
McCorry took a lot of punishment against Barrett on sat night - also against Archie Sharp a few weeks previous. Obviously a lot of heart - continually comes fwd, but can’t be good for his health. There was also a polish lad on the same BT bill fighting an up & comer - had fought numerous times this year, 26 in total I think with two wins. Reason he was picked - because he’s hard to put down. Also the reason Kevin Johnson was picked for Joshua, Gorman and Dubois. The ‘journey man’ is a career in itself - a very dangerous career, but one which they enter into freely. Fans have a problem with Allen, not because of his health - otherwise what about the other countless underpaid journeymen? But because is he’s actually made some good money doing it. Fair play to him - brave man. Hope he keeps in good health, as all other boxers # Patrick Day
Also I don't see what Dubois even gets out of this. Yes Allen is bizarrely popular (more than his talent warrants), but Dubois beating up on him for 6/8/10 rounds before either Allens chin finally cracks or the ref takes pity on him won't make Dubois more liked.
He's tried to sound tougher in some of the pre-fight interviews etc. My guess is that Bob Arum is telling them that his current persona won't work in the US. To be honest it's not a role that suits him. They'd be better off going the Frank Bruno route as he really comes across as just a very nice quiet lad when left to his own devices.
Yeah I missed the Barrett fight but saw the Polish lad. Although I think Allen is almost a unique case in that he boxes at heavyweight with virtually no defence, taking so many shots as opposed to many of these journeymen who may not have much offensive capability but do seem better at the defensive side of boxing. Ultimately, as you say above there's hypocrisy from us fans who like to see dramatic KO's but don't want to feel in some way responsible for what sometimes happens as a result.
I think it’s a good move for him. There’s always room in the business for a heel. Let’s be honest he doesn’t have the charisma or personality to be loved and adorned by fans, he’s a much better fit for a ruthless stone cold killer type.
It's funny I'd argue exactly the opposite. He lacks the charisma or personality to be a heel, let alone a stone cold killer, because he'd need to act pretty much opposite to his nature and we've already seen the lad is no actor. The best I've seen him is when he's been himself. Last year he spontaneously wished everyone a happy christmas at the end of his interview with a grin that lit up his face. I think marketing works best when it's tied as closely to reality as possible. This isn't Mike Tyson we're talking about, he's not in the same ball park...
