Heartbreaking. Absolutely horrendous news. I was looking at my computer for about 3 mintues till the message was processed by my brain. Terrible night. RIP champ.
RIP Patrick. I hate this so much. Truly horrific news. This is the second time this year I've done a RBR on here witnessing a man's last moments of consciousness. I'm getting really sick of it. I understand that this is a violent sport and that fighters know what they're risking, and that referees aren't always to blame, especially in the cases of Dadashev and Day. They were actually quite responsible, but for all of the referees who irresponsibly let guys be beaten from one side of the ring to the other, soaking up ungodly amounts of punishment, especially guys who they know have no chance, there's not really a place for them in this sport. There needs to be more accountability, more training, more education as to what signs/tells to look for in a fighters body language, basically this sport can do a better job. So start doing it.
Such sad news yet another tragic loss in our boxing family R I P Patrick My sincere condolences to your family & friends
Rip We need better medical care in the ring. Day was carried out the other night, and he didn't even have an oxygen mask on.... Sad...sad
Not much to say that hasn't already been said. I was watching the fight at the time and while he was being beaten, it wasn't until the final knock down and his head hit the canvas that my heart immediately sank. It felt very wrong the way he landed, and how he reacted and how long it took for everything to happen afterwards. Awful thing to happen, I feel for all those close to him and felt horrible having seen what happened and having the bad feeling that he may never be the same again. People need to remember how real this all is when they are spouting things about people doing things to look after their health, or the health of fellow competitors in this sport.
It's just desperately sad. For Patrick's family and loved ones, for his heartbroken trainer, for his opponent. I hope they all find some peace eventually and can be kind to each other and themselves.
I watched this fight live Terrible These guys are WARRIORS never forget that they literally put their lives on the line RIP
I’m not sure why this tragedy has overwhelmed the way it did when the ESPN notification popped up on my screen. I’ve experienced and seen unwarranted brutality before, so this heavy emotion that just filled my vessel is truly unexplainable. I thought I was jaded at this stage in my existence, I guess my sympathy is more selective now lying dormant until randomly summoned. At times I think about the precarious nature of the sport and how reasonably minded individuals volunteer their bodies to punishment. The positive trade off is short termed glory, a paycheck and if you’re blessed...an opportunity to repeat the unpredictable cycle in a larger arena. I saw Patrick quench the thirst of several hundred combat fans a handful of years ago, here in the city in which he grew up, NYC. To think his life is now permanently paused is almost surreal for me. The Babylonians once believed man was created from the essence of divine energy, mana, blood or in some cases a strong breath from a powerful deity. These gladiators surely understand on a subconscious level that what they do may someday cause them great harm. If our polytheistic ancestors from Babylon put faith in man to depict portions of their fabled greatness through combat then Patrick surely has been given a seat at a table exhibiting the finest ambrosia of ancient delicacies. Sleep in eternal peace my brother, I will miss you even without ever having the pleasure of really knowing you.
