RIP. Thoughts are with Day’s friends and family as well as Conwell- hopefully he stands by the statement he made before Day died, and can grieve this tragedy without blaming himself.
Oh man, hate to hear this. Tragic news of this young man’s death. I didn’t see this fight so I can’t comment on the ref or corner decision to let it continue. Just sorry for his friends and family Mr. Day. Rest In Peace champ.
In the case of Day, I think the referee was badly out of position during the final few seconds of the fight. Had Ruiz interceded sooner when Day was starting to list badly, Conwell might not connect with that final hook, and the back of Day's head might not hit the mat. Maybe the damage had already been done at that point. Maybe not. But the damage caused by that final punch and subsequent fall wouldn't have occurred, giving Day more of a chance than he had once he hit the canvas.
Horrible news....I had a bad feeling this was how it was going to wind up as soon as it happened. RIP, champ.
Man that's so sad. I didn't see the whole fight but unfortunately I did catch the finish and I was immediately concerned upon seeing the back of his head hit the canvas with the force it did and I could tell something was seriously wrong when he was being tended to by paramedics because I saw one of his arms and legs doing involuntary spasms. Of all the ring tragedies and fatalities I've witnessed over the years, and sadly they're racking up now, there's always one enduring image of the fallen warrior that haunts me and with this one it will be the back of Patrick Day's head hitting the canvas with that sickening thud. He was meant to be a lovely fella by all accounts too. Sincerest condolences to his loved ones, his team, and his opponent Charles Conwell. RIP
That letter and exchange rips my heart out every time I read it. Honestly, I'm going to take some time away from the sport. As time goes on for me, the more impact it has. I always hated hearing a fighter died, but Dadashev and Day's passing have hit me harder than past fatalities. All warriors. But my ability to cope with it by saying they know what they signed up for is waning, even though it's true.
Very sad news. My condolences go out to his friends and family. It must be very difficult for them, they must hate boxing right now. The weird thing is , is we’ve seen KO’s like that so many times in boxing or mma and nothing happens, I’m gutted that this had to happen to Day. I feel for his trainer too. His job is to get him ready, motivated and win fights but I’m sure he’s wondering if he should have sent him out for that last round.
As soon as his head hit the canvas I got real worried. I turned the fight off the moment conwell stopped celebrating because it was clear day was in a real.bad state very sad
Utterly moving, even through all his internal torment he understands the only way to cope with the pain is through picking up what Patrick left in the ring that night. He’s made an indefinite fan out of me.
