Neussel, Gains, Charles, Mitchell, Delaney all sound like they should be thereabouts, I'll start weedling them later!
Just even trying to get a consensus top 10 is going to be a shambles. I’ve tried to write a couple out and I’m far from satisfied with any attempt so far
How about tiers of 20? Corbett jackson fitz jeffries johnson dempsey tunney schmeiling sharkey carnera baer louis Charles Marciano Langford Mcvey Jeannette Wills Sullivan Burns
Who did Mitchell beat to justify putting him on this list? Charles beat a total of 1 ranked heavyweight, no 8 Neusel Mathews was a hyped up false alarm. Cockell made his heavyweight name beating a light heavy[Mathews], and a washed up Lastarza. Siki never even beat a second rate heavyweight and was defeated by heavyweight journeymen. He was never more than average even at 175lbs!
My top 10 would look something like: 1. Louis 2. Marciano 3. Dempsey 4. Johnson 5. Sullivan 6. Jeffries 7. Charles 8. Walcott 9. Schmeling 10. Fitzsimmons
well, I can't see Archie Moore not being on this list up to 1955. His peak victories at heavy were in these years. Larry Gains jumped out at me, but he has gotten his support. Harold Johnson--wins over Godoy, Henry, Charles, and Valdes among others in this era. Bob Satterfield. Wins over Valdes, Baker, Oma, etc in this era. Erratic but I think a top 100 is not out of reach. Bettina, Savold, and also consider Neusel.
Mitchell probably shaded his series with Burke and did well with McCaffrey, borderline, the rest I agree completely with you.
Fair comment, most of the omissions were picked up by the eagle-eyed experts! Satterfield I can never make my mind up about, so erratic but I'll put him in the mix and the selection of the last 20 will decide his fate. Harold straggled the eras up to and post 1955 more than anybody else but yeah, his pre 1955 form merits inclusion.
OK revised to include Walcott!Corbett jackson fitz jeffries johnson dempsey tunney schmeiling sharkey carnera baer louis Charles Marciano Langford Mcvey Jeannette Wills Sullivan Walcott Second tier of 20. Burns Goddard Maher Sharkey hart Clarke Gunboat Gibbons Godfrey 2 Pastor Conn Bivins Moore Willard Loughran Murray Maxim Ray Henry Greb. God help me!
Now the 41-60 bunch; Slavin,Choynski, Ruhlin, Martin, McCoy, Root, Gardner, O'Brien, Norfolk, Gains, Farr, Schaaf, Hamas, Stribling, Godoy, H Johnson-should he be higher?-Layne, Thompson, Fulton and Bettina. Thoughts?
