I wondered where people where at with him, whether they rate him, how far can he go and where does he need to improve? Thats 2 very good domestic wins now against fighters with good amateur pedigree and natural toughness. I believe just because these opponents are currently domestic level, that doesn’t mean they won’t push on to European honours or beyond. For example, when Groves and Degale fought, did we really believe at the time that they would both inevitably go onto win a world title? I digress. I’m impressed with Fitzy’s fundamentals, he does all the basics very well. However, he admitted in his post fight interview that most of the camp was spent getting the weight off and that he struggled with his sharpness in sparring. That’s not a good sign. He needs to be focussing on other aspects of his game. He is very heavy handed for the weight but that’s not enough. I thought Cheeseman exposed his lack of sharpness and adaptability last night. He did well eventually slowing Cheeseman down with the body work but it was too late in the fight. I hope he does fight Rose next as that will be another great lesson for him because Rose can certainly box and move. At the moment, he should keep on sharpening his tools at domestic level because he’s not ready to step up yet.
Difficult to gauge isn't it. I think he's the most natural boxer of the three (Cheeseman, Fowler, Fitz) but doesn't live the life the same way the others (particularly Fowler) do. There was a picture of him over the summer where he looked to have put on a stone or more of weight and apparently he's a bit of a party animal too. If he wants to make the most of his career, he needs to knock that on the head. He is, understandably, a bit of a hero in Preston now so it must be difficult to be a young man out and about where everyone wants to buy you a drink and have a piece of you. Tempting to get into bad habits. I think he's fun to watch - I like his style and think if he really knuckles down he can do well. Difficult to know whether 'well' means beyond British level - but why not? I also think he's very likeable, similaries to Hatton in some ways (obviously not the same scale) - but same laddish football fan following that treat his fights like an away game. If I were Matchroom - I'd really invest in him now. Make him their chosen fighter for that weight class. Get him away from Preston if needs be.
Although he's beaten Cheeseman and Fowler, they were both close fights, he hasn't shown that he's levels above them both but has earned the right to try his hand at European level but I see that as his ceiling. Liam Smith would be too much for him and probably fringe world level himself.
Depends if he keeps his head straight, that’s literally it. Even admitted himself he’s never took boxing seriously, hence his previous cocaine habits and a unhealthy lifestyle. If he takes it seriously, lives in the gym, no reason he can’t go on further. I just know Sky will chuck him in with Fowler next, and Fowler get the nod in a stinking decision. If I was Fitz I’d stick the middle finger to Sky and go with Uncle Frank, unfortunately he won’t get the fights or profile with him so it’s catch 22. One thing for certain is though, Sky are not keen on him.
Most of the camp spent getting the weight off? A very different story to the one sold on Friday. This content is protected
On paper Fitzgerald is now the most marketable fighter out of the 3. He's the best looking (Which let's be honest isn't difficult compared to sloth and Fowler), is the most likeable and has a fan friendly style, plus he's beaten them both now. Sky however, have him way down the pecking order of the 3. Fowler's their golden boy, they'd have wanted Cheeseman to win so Fowler could beat him and then they can have their 'Star'. I think Coldwell's influence can't be understated as he's very much in the matchroom clique.
Completely agree with this post but I’d love to see him prove us wrong. Strangely enough even with the L on his record I actually think Fowler will go the furthest out of them all and have the superior career in terms of big fights, wins and resume. I don’t know what it is about him but it’s just a gut feeling I get from him having seen him inside and outside the ring. And I’m not even particularly a fan of him.
Am finding myself agreeing with this. Read a Fowler interview on scene where he basically admits he got humbled and had to change his approach, who he hangs around with etc. Could be a good lesson for him
He looked sluggish the first half of the fight but he was dominant in the final third and he was only a round away from stopping ted at the end imo.As you say there's room for improvement. being a more dedicated athlete would certainly help.
He said that he made the weight comfortably but that was because he spent so long cutting weight during camp. He said next time he isn't going to balloon so he can work on other things in the gym rather than just be cutting weight for the whole camp.
That wasn’t my point though mate. I’m not suggesting he struggles to make weight, rather he needs to look after himself in-between camps so he can spend his camps concentrating on his skills, speed and timing rather than boiling down.
Maybe Sky aren’t that keen if they know he doesn’t take it that seriously, or hasnt up to now anyhow. If he does rematch Fowler I hope he sparks the Scouse ****er. Genuinely dislike him, he’s a smarmy, self obsessed little git. Tell he’s a Coldwell fighter, he’s the most unlikeable trainer as well.
Oh no, I wasn't disputing anything you were saying, just that it sounded like Fitz might have been slightly contradictory in his comments, although that seems to be have been rectified on here now by subsequent posts. I like Fitz, I like him a lot and I want to see him go far, sounds like he definitely needs to be doing what you're saying as the higher you go the more the technical ability matters, tenfold.
If he could knuckle down and live the life he’d have every chance of going far. (how far I don’t know) Dunno why Sky doesn’t seem invested in him despite having a big following in Preston and being unbeaten. Fowler really seems to be there guy . Hearn looked sick when Fitzy had won. He’s never lived the life and he’s done well to make the weight after he put a load on months back.
It’s a tough one to gauge. As a fan I’d love the Fowler or Cheeseman rematch again next but if I’m being honest and putting myself in Fitz shoes that’s the last thing I need. Fitz has got nothing to gain by any rematch other than a decent pay day which will probably still be there later down the line and maybe even bigger. I’d be targeting the European scene. As for his actual ability I think she’s flashed of brilliance but other times flatters to deceive. His cutting off of the ring last night was poor at best. He can be a bit easy to hit and I’d like to see him give a bit more in the early rounds. It’s brilliant finishing strong but it tells me he’s still got a lot more in the tank for them earlier rounds. If he could learn to pace fights a bit better he would be winning far more comfortably.
