In his own words Galento said that he liked to fight tall fighters like "6'8, 6'9" because they offered more target to be hit. So Galento may have been the banana peel to AJ, Fury, Wilder, Bowe and the K2 brothers.
Galento never fought anyone 6'8-6'9, the closest he got was 6'6 Buddy Baer, who he was stopped by However he did have good success with the men he fought whom where 6'3-6'5. I mean he fought out of a crouch, which is made for taller fighters (since Galento is 5'9). There's some truth to that statement of "larger fighters" but he has no alibi for beating someone like Tyson Fury.
The amateurs and the pro scene aren't the same, though I'm sure I don't have to explain this. Marciano fought men 6'3-6'5 in the amateurs but nobody gives him credit against "SHWs" for it. Shawn Porter beat Oleksandr Usyk in the amateurs but nobody would give him a shot against Usyk now.
A banana peel like one of them might have accidentally stepped on him while he was laying on the floor?
Sure, but a fighter might get a good idea how he would do against certain styles, from his amateur experience.
Galento was short and fought low bringing his hook from below his knees up to the taller fighters chin. Tough punch to see coming from so low to so high. My Dad back in the 30’s would watch Isadora Gastenaga (sp) train at his camps in Pa and described to me a similar punch style. He watched Isadora bring his hook from the ring floor up to his sparring partners chin knocking him cold.
Bringing your hook from below your knees is a good way to get lit up against a talented big man with a much longer reach, better skills, and straighter punches. In his defense though, if you actually watch his fights, he only fought like that in spurts. Most of his punches did not come from below his knees. And Galento's punches were extremely easy to see, as they were wide and often telegraphed.
Shawn Porter also fought Danny Jacobs, but lost Artur Beterbiev beat Michael Hunter in the amateurs but lost to Usyk 2x The amateur scene is wild
