I live there and fighters complain there are lack of amateur boxing matches across all weight classes why is it like that down here ?
I don't want to sound corny but in a place like Florida, the teenagers are probably chasing girls in bikini's and having parties and blow-out's every day. Especially them that live near the coast. It's just too close to the entrapments of life. Sometimes, it is just better to be from a boring place in the middle of nowhere, a place in which if you do find you could have a future in boxing, there is little to no distractions. You only have boxing. Young men, give them a little money, a little attention from them girls and something to brag about and they will already think they have conquered the world. Unfortunately, it is a case of climbing the first step and believing you have reached the summit. Floyd Mayweather is a perfect example of someone who consistently wanted more. It was not enough for him that his father and uncle were champions, it was not enough to live of their names, it was not enough for him what he achieved in his amateur career. When he got robbed blind at the Olympics, the excuse of a robbery was not enough for him. He always aimed for more; more money, glory, contracts, belts and divisions. Pac-Man has a similar story too. Even in the professional ranks,I can only think of Roy Jones Jr. (Pensacola) Antonio Tarver (Orlando) Keith Thurman (Clearwater) Erickson Lubin (Orlando) I just found this on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Boxers_from_Florida
Because everybody in Florida already watched their kids box in the ammy's back 50 years ago and the other ones still watch their kids box on the Cuban National Team.
Theres not alot of boxing gyms out there....i lived there back in the 90s and went to the Golden Gloves tournament in 1997, Lennox Lewis was a special guest.....but i only know of one boxing gym out in miami, that's not very much
I live in Orlando and there is actually a pretty decent amateur boxing program in Kissimmee. In fact alot of professional fights happen in Kissimee as well. Miguel Cotto also owns a few boxing gyms in the area focusing on youth amateurs. Not as big as amateur boxing in New York, but I suspect it has more to do with population and also the fact Florida is a retirement state, so there won't be any state programs geared towards amateur anything.
Kissimmee area churns out a lot of excellent athletes period. Andre Berto is from Florida too. Actually, tgere are a ton I just cant think off the top of my head. Amateur boxing is like that almost anywhere in the cou try sace for 2-3 regions. Its just veginning to make a big comeback in New England.
couple of florida boxers yall forgot Randally bailey Vince phillips Nate campbell Tavoris cloud jeff lacy ericson lubin ray mercer (born in FL) Winky wright I'd say for a state that only cares about football we do alright
Floyd has changed boxing in the US. People see how much money he made and now fathers are putting their young sons in boxing programs to see if they have any talent. You're seeing more and more of father coach and son teams too.
