These are hard to rate, I mean Max knocked out Joe Louis! Norton beat Ali at least twice! Who had the best performances career wise?

2. Norton
3.Patterson
I don't think Floyd beats either man in their primes, but I could be wrong ,they are close

 

Schmeling all the way. One of boxings 5 or 6 greatest minds for mapping out strategies DURING a fight.

I'd have Schmeling above Norton if only he hadn't fought such a stupid fight vs Baer.

Schmeling edges it because of how huge the Louis win was.

 

He had no choice. Baer was a man possessed that night and fought to his full pontential. The old World International Big Book of Boxing mags used to have a beautiful article on the fight called "Max vs. Max". While Baer was not a Jew, hos managers were and Baer was determined to destroy the German Schmeling for them. This was Baer at his very best. Schmeling NEVER tried for a rematch.

Meh. Schmeling was clearly outboxing Baer when he opted to box. Instead he discarded that approach for a head-on strategy which was daft. I agree that Baer actually came to fight, for a change, as opposed to playing the clown.

Patterson Norton Schmeling for resume. Patterson is always underrated due to his losses to Liston. But he had a lot of grit and stayed relevant long after that doing well in the the heavyweight tournament (some people believe he got robbed, which would have made him the 1st 3x champ). Combined with his amateur career patterson had a hell of a run.

Norton and Schmeling both have better signature wins (ali and Louis) but their overall achievements arent as good as Patterson's overall. I have Norton above schmeling because he did soooo good against 3 of the best technicians of all time and you could make an argument he won all those fights (Ali, Holmes, young).

Schmeling wasnt as consistent as Norton or Patterson and had some iffy losses you cant gloss over and several of them were unavenged. At least Norton and Patterson got their revenge in some rematches.

I have it Norton, Patterson, then Schmeling h2h although all 3 are very close.

I can see an argument for any order, and I have them close to each other - all between 22 and 31 - on my heavyweight list. (My lists are about 75% H2H and 25% greatness, so too subjective for many).
For now, I'm going with: 1. Schmeling 2. Norton, 3. Patterson.

Norton never won the worlds hwt championship do the two true champions rate well above him. Schmeling edges Patterson due to his all time win over Louis.
