I think you’re doing a bit of a disservice to people watching to be fair. I think most people will have an idea of who the favourite is; the odds are routinely shown on the broadcast before the fight for example, and nearly everyone seems to have access to a betting site or app these days. If Taylor was a significant 1/5 or so favourite people would know Ritson was a sizeable outsider. As for the fight, depending on when it happens I’ve no problem with it within reason. Let Ritson have a couple more and keep it on the back burner for now but part of Hearn’s job is to make his fighters money, and Ritson, for an upper domestic/European level fighter appears to generate a fair bit of interest in Newcastle. It would likely be one sided and it would be likely that Taylor wins but it’s not such a mismatch that it shouldn’t happen.
Casuals will not have an idea of who the favorite is as Mr Hearn will sell it as a 50/50. Conning people into thinking Ritson has a chance. This is only my opinion on the matter..
No, I disagree. The odds for fights are routinely shown on the broadcast. I can’t think of the last time I watched a big fight on Sky and they didn’t show the odds. (Don’t William Hill sponsor all the shows anyway?) The target audience will be men in their 20s/30s and that market will inevitably be aware of the fight odds. I don’t think Hearn really sells one sided fights as 50/50’s. There’s a standard issue approach to pretty much every fight: Both fighters 5/6, one fighter 4/7 other guy 11/10: ‘It’s a proper fifty fifty fight.’ One guy 1/5: ‘He can’t get complacent. This guy (outsider) has trained all his life for this.’ One guy 1/33: “Buster Douglas. Hasim Rahman. Andy Ruiz. In this sport you never write anyone off.” It’s all cliche and entirely predictable. But Taylor Ritson will be sold as a popular local outsider taking on the world champion.
It’s a miss match, but as long as it isn’t PPV I don’t begrudge Taylor an easier fight with Ritson next after that brutal war with Regis. It will also be a great atmosphere in Scotland/Newcastle , so it should make for a good Saturday fight night card. If it makes Ritson a good earner as well to secure himself, then i’m happy with that also.
I'd go to St James Park to watch it. Would be confident of a 30K crowd for sure. Taylor will win - just too good, but it will sell tickets IMO.
To be fair to Ritson he took everything Davies had and barely blinked. Maybe the body short Patera hurt him with was a weight thing. Will be interesting to see going forward. For now there is little point in Ritson Taylor. If Taylor was to loose it would be a good domestic fight to get him back to winning ways and would probably sell well with the geography of both fighters and the styles should mesh but Taylor would be too big and too good. Ritson had a good win last time out but he needs matching carefully - he has obvious strenghts but we have seen how much he struggled with a relatively tidy back foot boxer,.
Good way to make a star out of Taylor if he does sign with matchroom. Makes him feel 'big time' and likely to have a big fight at a stadium in Scotland in the future too. Ritson gets a title shot and a nice pay day. Win for both fighters. Thats a promoters job.
I like ritson but he's along way off this fight.... He would get an absolute beating... I'm hoping he can still get to world level but he needs to change some things and take some time to improve... Fight fringe euro level and step up when he's ready for it
This.. Ritson is a clasic case of that guy with power and a chin.. hasn't got a plan B doesn't always set his work up well enough and he could be better on defense. But hes got power, a decent chin, and good timing and accuracy be interesting to see if he can get to that next level.
