It needs to be Twenty's gimmick to fit in as many tenuous name-drops for 80s comedians as possible. "That southpaw jab of Usyk's reminds me of the time I shared a pepperoni pizza with Les Dennis"....etc
They've toned things down a lot, particularly since the Benoit episode for obvious reasons. While that's obviously a good thing, the product has really suffered. The 80s and 90s guys were charismatic, larger than life, walking pharmacies fuelled by a ready supply of Escobar's finest marching powder. It made for great TV at least. These days even the top guys are bland, everyman types.
I read Regal's book a while back. The guy has been on a rollercoaster ride, but seems to have come out of it all well. It was interesting reading about his comedy influences, and how he tried to incorporate those into his character. You wouldn't normally think of Tommy Cooper and Larry Grayson as inspirations for a pro wrestler; in his pomp the Americans lapped up that kind of humour.
I’ve not read his book but he said he was a huge fan of the northern comics at the time, especially due to his time working in Blackpool. I used to get random emails from him with a sneaky phone pic of some dwarf he’d seen whilst out and about on the street. Like me, he found them hilarious. He’s a really lovely, respectful fella to talk to.
Haha, honestly mate, I’d sound like an absolute tool if I did. There’s no real gap between working on the comedy circuit and getting on telly/radio etc. A lot of acts these days tend to do both as it doesn’t pay enough to just do panel shows etc. So a jobbing comic like me ends up sharing bill with a lot of these folk. There’d also the ones who have done so well that they never have to go back to working at comedy clubs. I’ve been doing it 17 years so I’ve crossed paths with many who are now household names. I know my post contradicts this but if you met me, I wouldn’t even mention I do comedy never mind drop names
There’s some BS on here, Fury did exactly what he was supposed to do. Fury looks good because he won, and Strowman looks good because he took a clean shot from the ‘lineal heavyweight champion’, was not knocked out, and then got his revenge post match. If you’re going to lose a match, other than DQ, the best way to protect a wrestler is have them lose by count out. Fury sold the move for exactly as long as he was supposed to. It wasn’t Strowman’s finisher, and the only moves that are remotely protected in WWE these days are finishers and that’s debatable! By all accounts WWE are very keen to work with Fury again, and if he does return he does so with a victory over a monster. Meanwhile Strowman’s character is not damaged in the slightest.
Him coming out dressed as a sheikh was the best part! The fight served it's purpose though, to get his name out there to a new audience and it looks like he had fun doing it. Back to boxing now though lad!
I don’t know who’s worse, the people who watched the wrestling and are criticising Fury’s performance or the people who watched the wrestling and are defending Fury’s performance?
Last time I checked this site was crawling with boxing accountants and undiscovered couch-based promoters just waiting for that big break. Now everyone’s a chartered fcking WWE choreographer all of a sudden
