In both fights Canelo won in the defense category in more rounds, punchstats supports this.

In both fights Canelo won the clean punching category, the eye test supports this and in the rematch GGGs face supports this.

In the first fight Canelo backing up and GGG moving forward in rounds 4-9 give the impression that GGG won Ring generalship, while Canelo gives that impression in rounds 1-3 and 10-12 with his counter punching and getting the best of GGG. In the rematch they fought Canelo's fight. Canelo chose to stay in the center of the ring and counter punch Golovkin like he did against Angulo.

In the first fight I will say that Canelo was the more effective aggressor in rounds 1-3 and 10-12, while not as effective in rounds 4-9 where GGG was able to give the impression he was doing more by coming forward with the jab, but reality shows he only averaged less than 3 puncher more per round than Canelo, which punches were jabs. In the rematch he was not as effective as Canelo by any stretch of the imagination. He got his face and body busted up, was on the retreat many times, and ran to the lockeroom possibly for a medical examination immediately after the fight.
