What do you think would have happened if Escalera had fought DeJesus around this time?

Just to even it up I've made it a catchweight bout of sorts with both men coming in at no more than 133.

The snake man Escalera was a very good boxer with some good wins, with exeption of the title defense against the late Tyronne Everett, which was a hotly disputed victory for Alfredo. He was fast, but susceptible to cuts as we saw in a title losing effort against Alexis Arguello in 1978. De Jesus was a natural lightweight, who fought the likes of Cervantes and Duran. A very good tactical fight would be crowd entertaining. both fighter would be staggered on occasion by the other. Esteban by the closest of majority decision. Both were great fighters.

DeJesus was a level above Escalera.

This would have been a very entertaining fight. Escalera is fun to watch. Tough guy but DeJesus was better.
