I know i am a bit late to the party with this thread. I watched the Taylor Prograis fight a few times and i don't see what the fuss is all about. The things that made it not enjoyable for me were: 1. The shoulder charging from Taylor. I found that very difficult to watch. 2. No ebb and flow. It was just the same thing for 12 rounds. 3. As above, it was just the same few punches thrown again and again for 12 rounds. 4. By round 3 it was obvious neither guy would knock the other out. 5. By round 5 it was obvious neither guy would knock the other out and there would be no change of tempo. 6. The fighting was in so close that there seemed to be no spectacular punches thrown with leverage. 7. I will say it again. The constant shoulder charging and shoulder pushing by Taylor. I am prepared to get shredded for saying this!! Appreciate all thoughts. BB
I thought it would be more exciting myself but it was far from boring. In my view Prog didn't do much. The story of this fight was the high level display of skills from Taylor. Dude is the real deal.
Close fight by two proven and highly skilled top fighters in their prime, both nearing to get into p4p, with little interference by the referee and lots of intrigue till the very end of the fight. I don't have stats at hand, but I didn't feel like it was a 'few punches thrown' fight, I thought the punch output was average or above. It felt very engaging, so no, the fight was rather enjoyable.
After Gvozdyk v Beterbiev it would be hard to follow such a fight. It being another 50/50 fight it played out pretty much as I expected.I know some like to claim their guy is “gonna destroy” the other but genuine 50/50 fights rarely go down like this.
I feel it'll be seen as an unpopular opinion but I can respect where you come from. Not every fight will be everyone's cup of tea I did get frustrated by the reluctance showed by prograis but he mounted a hell of a rally late in the fight Out of curiosity which fight did you like better: this fight or the donaire vs inonue fight?
Thanks all for your thoughts...I can definitely see that it was a good fight but just for me personally it didn’t do it for all the reasons mentioned but probably the prime reasons being the shoulder barging and the fact that it was one dimensional. At KO Kidd, yes I definitely preferred Innoue vs Donaire...it had ebb and flow and the feel that either man could be stopped at any moment...and fought at a more aesthetically pleasing distance.
I didn't find it quite as scintillating as everyone else, but it was a good, solid, competitive match with a lot of back and forth between two athletes at the top of their game. It's unreasonable to expect too much more than that.
I do agree about Taylor's shoulder charging. It sucked if you were a Prograis fan because Taylor won the fight with that tactic.
