I can't watch the Hatton fight because of Cortez- his post fight response was so full of holes. I don't want to say he is being influenced but recently he definately wants to make a statement.

past couple of years recently cortez has favored one fighter over the other and in my opinion it is very obvious. Anyway, he made a bad call, as the punch was not intentional. Part of the problem was HIM to begin with, because he broke them up while Soto was about to KO Lorenzo, almost as if saying Im stopping the bout, but then it looked like he changed his mind. It actually appeared like he was helping Lorenzo by fending Soto off of him when he was hurt and giving him a bit more time to recover. He broke them apart two times within that sequence... I thought the fight was stopped, so did Soto but then he let them continue.

Manny Steward did look like he was ready to cry from it; he took it very personal hahaha. He said he wasnt going to curse on t because he had made a promise. At that point when he was saying that his voice went in and out due to the high emotion, it was funny. Also, at first Lampley said lets see if we can get an interview with Joe Cortez, but then when he saw Stewards face and reaction, he was like ok, Joe Cortez will not be available for an interview. I think he got the hint that Steward could have been so angered at the moment that he would of hit Cortez over the head with the microphone. He sure had that expression as if he wanted to personally beat the crap out of Cortez for that call.

Cortez is too inconsistant and can't ref big fights anymore.

Cortez is going to get a lot fo flack for this, but it was a messed up situation all around. Soto cleary hit the guy when he was down. What really ****s everything up was that the held the back of his head, complained, and acted like he couldn't continue. Now at this point Cortez can either pretend like he didn't see the foul occur, or he could consult to make sure of the rules before he acted.

This is very similar to the Jones vs. Griffen fight. In both fights, the guy was hit illegally while they were down, and pretended like they couldn't continue. In the Jones fight though, the foul was more pronounced. However, the rules don't say anything about how bad the foul looks. Where Cortez's judgement really comes into play is when he told the commsioner that the blow was intentional. Now once he said this, Soto had to be DQ'd, there's no argument there. The real problem is whether or not Cortez should've ruled that it was intentional to begin with.

 

Cortez ****ing sucks. He wasn't good in Hatton-Mayweather, terrible in Hopkins-Calzaghe, and ****ing criminal here. How he gets big fights anymore is beyond me.

I don't want to see a rematch, because Soto might genuinely kill him. And, after the fact, he'd probably still be the only one carrying the body out. I'd rather see Humberto get himself a payday vs Pacman rather than have to go through the motions against a fighter who's not in his class. Lorenzo's face looked like a damn Picasso painting- all over the place, and ugly as ****.

 

The real problem is that Joe Cortez is not consistent in making this call. Worse violations of this have happened when he was the ref without it being a DQ. It also doesn't help his cause that he broke the fight up twice based apparently on nothing more than that Soto was humiliating and disfiguring Lorenzo.
