Some historical perspective on Deontay Wilder becoming just the 6th heavyweight champion in history to make 10 or more consecutive title defenses. This content is protected
Its impressive, but I find quality of oppositions a big factor. If Wilder fought in Ali's era, how many title defenses would he have? Or, if he fought Fury, Ruiz, Joshua, would he still be as dominant
The only thing which is that impressive about his ability to hold on to the belt, is his and his team's ability to avoid facing the best in the division.
We can not compare 10 defenses of a belt at the time when there are four with 10 defenses when there is only one title. Especially when we see the weakness of the first 4-5 defenses.
Ali's 10 defenses were of the undisputed lineal HW Crown. Holyfield made 3 defenses of the undisputed lineal HW Crown. Bowe and Lewis were the last undisputed lineal HW Crown holders , although neither of them defended it as some belts were dropped. Wilders title defenses are like Arthur Abraham , Sven Ottke's or Marco Hocks. Single belt defenses against medium opposition. Bowe beating prime best ever Holyfield in one fight to become Undisputed champ is imo greater than Wilder 10 defenses.
I don't care about that so called "lineal" championship at all, because in reality it's as lineal as time in the relativity theory. But that doesn't mean I don't think it's a very good accomplishment. Tyson's all belt (undisputed) championship trumped Spinks' no belt "lineal" and even the Ring championship in my book, and at the time I remember is that almost nobody outside of boxing press and pure boxing fans saw anyone else as Tyson as the man at Heavyweight. Most didn't even know who Michael Spinks was. The Fury thing shouldn't be a historical hurdle imo because otherwise Ali's defence streak would be invalid too as would the Holmes one. So, the main issue though is not that many saw Fury win, or that he only has a single belt, but the level of opposition compared to the other big names in the division, never being rated the division's #1 with any major publication, and not ever attempting to unify the belts despite there being no valid reason not to.
Wilders WBC reign = Vitali’s WBC reign If he defeats Fury he’ll have the edge.. So regardless how you feel about his style or skills keep the same energy for Vitali..
Wilder's opposition is laughable. His best victory is an old glass jaw Ortiz. All his KOs are against fighters with suspect chins. He couldn't drop Dupuah, who is know to have a decent chin and before Stevern deteriorated he ate all his punches for 12 rounds.
As usual Rummy touches all the bases on his home run trot. Nice job. The only thing I would add is that so far, Wilder's greatest single fighting accomplishment was a draw against Fury. That does dull the shine a bit.
Wilder is already a legend is his own mind, imagine if he gets hold of an imaginary belt to ? lol Keep in mind this character said Lineal is above all and if he beats Fury is above undisputed with a Lineal title ,but after the fight he said Fury was an imaginary champion who had no titles ? Yes keep supporting these phantom titles ,its a reason we didn't get the REAL belts on the line and severe agenda against AJ was promoted by Showtime/PBC and ESPN as THEY had the world title fight that would crown the REAL champion....You cant be a REAL champion with no belt /belts. . lol On Wilder 10 title defense. He lost his 8th title defense no matter what you say ...so theres that to. lol That's a X mark as far as im concerned. So maybe Fury would have a REAL belt not what is very unimportant label called Lineal these days.
Because it’s customary for the lighter punching challenger to be given a decision in an even punchstats fight after being dropped twice in separate championship rounds and given a long count after losing consciousness.
