I saw something on IG that was making fun of wilder for only making 2 title defenses against joe louis 25+ or whatever it is. This is silly, joe was traveling around the country fighting bums off the street, carnival attractions, local tough guys. Their records were fuzzy if not often false, and were not properly trained HW contenders. I would say wilder knocking out a world class boxer like ortiz who has serious skills and trained his entire life to be a boxer is A LOT more impressive.

    LOLOLOLOL

Wilder will never, and I repeat WILL NEVER, be on a level with Joe Louis. Not skill, not résumé, not legacy.

    Never.

Louis took on the best, and never anything less. Wilder actively does the opposite.

I'm pretty sure Louis beat all of the best of his era in his prime. Even the bum of the month thing was an exaggeration as he faced people who had earned the right to be contenders all but once, he defended his title legitimately 25 times and at least 10 of them to very good fighters. Wilder on the other hand... His ten total are embarrassing compared to it.

There were full time boxers back then too. They fight way more, it was a tougher era too.
Ruiz had a way worse resume than Louis & he became champ. Louis would be champ in today's division

Louis had more than 30 wins against ranked opponents during his career. Wilder has three, or maybe four and he hasn't beaten any of the very top guys. Louis went through all the top names for almost 15 years, beating everyone until his first retirement.

Their resumes are so far apart in terms of quality that it is hard to overstate.

Lmao Wilder got dropped by Sconiers...
Wilder got rocked to his core by Eric Molina
Wilder was hurt as **** against Ortiz
    Wilder lost to Fury

At least Louis took on actual contenders in his way to the title...
At least Louis was the actual undisputed champion and lived Wilder's motto...

One face, one name, one champion, Joe Louis...

Joe Louis was a true champion, an American hero in every sense. He fought anyone who agreed to fight him. He definitely fought his share of cans, especially later in his career when he had money problems. I think he fought something like 8 times in his last year of boxing, well beyond his prime until his final fight, against Marciano. They say Marciano took no pleasure in beating the faded shell of the former great Joe Louis. It was the last time Louis ever stepped into the ring. He knew he didn’t have anything left but fought anyway. Louis was before my time but history is clearly on his side.

Wilder is a great puncher, maybe one of the best. We may never know because he has managed to avoid all top challengers, except Fury who gave him a boxing lesson for 10/12 rounds. It’s easy to look good when you only fight overmatched or past prime opponents. I’m not a wilder hater and hope he proves he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as all time greats like Louis. He’s got a long way to go and I wish him luck.

    Disagree completely.

Joe Louis had a great run of defences as the champion and number one fighter at heavyweight, not just a great run, but longest ever, and unlikely to be beat in our lifetime.

Deontay Wilder holds a belt, that is all. He’s never been number one in the division and might never be. If Wilder had fought the ranking of opponents he has during a era with a single belt, he would still be just a contender yet to face the champion.

Wilder is a champion in name only, he’s never been the number one guy in his division like Joe Louis was.

You have to remember Joe Louis was giving everyone a chance, those were the Great Depression years, there was no super gates of millions of dollars, that began with Don King, people were in soup lines. The fighters of today could not have survived this atmosphere, too spoiled. Back then, men were more responsible, had to feed their families, but also taken advantage of by crooked shrewd individuals. As a world champion, everyone who works their way to the top, deserves a chance, a champion should display their skills all over the world, as you are a world champion, not a United States champion only. Joe Louis was a man and a great human being, not a pick and choose champion of today. He was a gifted athlete who did not believe in running off at the mouth, waiting for the next dose of Kaopectate.

And except for Ortiz Wilders resume is made out of Scorniers, Nichols, the pastry chef, the sub teacher, Stiverne, Spilka (?), Arreola? Half of them would qualify as carnival attractions and the other would be local tough guys.

Agree with all of this, but the "bum a month" was real, just like Louis's skills, he ate up fellas that wouldn't get anywhere near a title these days, but he was a special fighter none the less and his ranking all time is warranted
