147lbs. Two very good Welterweight Champions. How does this one look? Can Palomino get inside and work the body? Their both somewhat slow starters. Can Tito find the range for those precise hooks and crosses? He had power in every punch he threw. Trinidad has a height advantage but I don't think he would be able to keep Palomino on tbe outside consistantly. Trinidad by decision. Close but clear. His conditioning and ability to carry his power would be key. Palomino usually wore guys down but Tito was awesome when it came to stamina.
This would be a tough fight to call, I admired both. Carlos Palomino was a very good body puncher, with a great left hook, like the one he used to kayo Davey Boy Green, in 1977. Felix Tito Trinidad was a terrific boxer with a crushing right hand, he got knocked down in some of his matches, but always got up to kayo his opponents. He had very good speed which would trouble Carlos, remember the Wilfred Benitez fight in 1979. With that being said, Tito wins a very close majority decision, but Palomino's body punching leaves it's mark, as Tito was vulnerable to body punching as seen against Hopkins, in 2001. Great match up.
I'm guessing predictions on this will be split mostly along generational lines - if you grew up watching the welterweights of the 70s, you'll probably pick Palomino. If you grew up watching the welterweights of the 90s, like me, you'll probably pick Trinidad. I pick Tito on points.
Duran was a 135 who moved up. Tito was a same day weigh-in welter with huge power. Don’t try to tell me Duran could punch like Tito at 147.
Yes, I think Leonard, Moore, Cuevas and Barkley would attest to that. Duran is p4p one of the hardest punchers ever.
Of course I do. All you got to say? Duran punched just as hard or harder than Tito, and proved it at higher weights.
