He was a good fighter, but very small for a heavyweight even for his era That factor, however, just goes to show what a good fighter he was pound-for-pound. When he he retired to join the military and I think he was one of the two top contenders right behind Conn. I believe he enlisted after Louis because he realized the championship would likely be in mothballs during the few years he had left as a top contender.
He obviously was skilled and had fighting spirit. He faced some brutal fighters like Louis and Conn, beat some lesser known but excellent opponents like Thompson, Toles, Bivens, Ettore... He would make a mark at LHW or CW in any era.
Was just looking into Pastor's career, and found that he was born on January 26, 1914, started his pro career on January 26, 1935, and died on January 26, 1996. Rather strange coincidence.
There is no shame in that. Bob had 65 fights in seven years ...and only Joe Louis and billy conn ever knocked him out. The five other times he lost was only by decision. One was a split verdict. Two were guys he beat in rematches.
