Such fighters as Charley Burley, Joe Choynski, Joe Jeannette, Sam Langford, and Laszlo Papp (among others) all have one thing in common: a plaque in Canastota but not a world title strap. Will any other elite boxers from the post-1989 era who didn’t win a title ever make it into Canastota? The very thought seems impossible despite amt. of trinkets floating around. What say you – will a world title always be a minimum req for giving a HOF speech?

Ibeabuchi had the best shot at it, but it's hard to be a good fighter and not win at least 1 belt cause there's 5 of them. So not winning the title nowadays is a much, much more severe offense nowadays than yesteryear.

So, until the organizations are eliminated and we go back to the correct function of sport (one champion per weight class), yes being A TITLIST will most likely be a requirement for the HOF, though perhaps it's more correct to say that being HOF worthy will guarantee at least 1 title.

Is Tua in? If not I reckon he will be at some point. He never won a title

If your fame is bigger than a title, you do not need it...

I doubt very much, that Tua will ever get on the ballot - let alone get voted in. I can't see that happen!

With the number of titles there are today, it would be had to justify inducting somebody who had never held one.

I am not saying that it would be impossible, but it would be a hard sell.

The only examples that I can think of from the post war era are Jimmy Bivins, Charley Burley, Cocoa Kid, Holman Williams, and Lloyd Marshal.

It seems that a inductee who never held a title, is likely to be a fighter who was never given the chance!

Maybe Earnie Shavers has a shot as his name always gets a mention whenever the discussion of who was the most biggest puncher ever with numerous past testimonies from the noted likes of Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes to lent support to his case. He is definitely one who’s enduring reputation exceeds his actual career achievements.

Nope. Marcel was one of the best modern featherweight champs, and he isn't in.

From past eras things like the colour bar being drawn prevented possible HOF candidates from even trying for a belt/title, so some of those gentlemen could well be inducted without a belt.

Presently with the preponderance of alphabet titles no i cannot see a non title holder being deserving of HOF status.

If that were the case, there are not enough spots in the Hall of fame for this. I see the point you are making. You still have to be exceptional to make it in the hall.

Yeah, in the alphabet era, not having a title to your name is pretty much a deal breaker. It's hard to imagine a fighter getting enough quality wins to merit induction without ever picking up a title.

I would have to say that Lucas Mattyssee is probably the best 'belt-less' fighter of this era based on his accomplishments and he's a long, long way from making it into the IBHOF.

Rafael Herrera was the legit, lineal champion with wins over Rudolfo Martinez, 'Chucho' Castillo, and Ruben Olivares (X2) and even he isn't in, so Shavers or Tua getting in would be pretty ridiculous.

It is a hall of fame, not greatness...

If he could sell the tickets for the weekend Shavers is in, hell Butterbean has a chance if enough of the fancy went ironic one year.

Not sure anyone should be voted into HOF if they haven't won a strap.

    This is basically correct.

When Time Magazine were criticized for making Hitler and Stalin Man of the Year, they replied that it was not in any way intended to be an honor!

Yes if Butterbean became enough of a pay per view star, then you could induct him!
