I think Page was the more skillful of the two but he was very inconsistent. I take Mercer on points. Thoughts?
I like Mercer. Page was all hype IMO an Ali wannabe. He was tough though just too overhyped befor he turned pro and never lived up to it. Never disciplined either which was his own fault. Mercer could have been more consistent himself. I got Mercer on points
Best vs Best, Page wins this by wide decision. But, quite frankly, how often did Page show up in peak mental and physical condition? It was somewhat of a nagging problem for both these men.
Perhaps Page at his very best, could win...but my money would Go on Mercer as the more likely winner.
Page on his best day I could see winning a decision but with his inconsistenancy I'd think Mercer would win by either out working Page or eventually blasting Page out.
The Mercer that fought Lewis beats any Page .. Page was one of those guys whose sum came up less than his parts .. both were capable of big performances and moments. Two athletically gifted big men with power and excellent chins .. both pissed away their prime years with inconsistent focus and training and gave their best performances late in careers as skills eroded ..
Mercer. Ray actually had one of the best jabs at heavyweight tin the 1990's. Page had a bit more speed and power, but couldn't take it. It would be a good match up.
Agreed. The Mercer who destroyed Morrison vs the Page who beat Coetzee would be a pick ‘em fight. But both these men had so many up and down evenings in their careers that anything could happen.
