If Cooney could hurt Primo early, drop him a few times then I see carnara s confidence gone and Gerry mauls him to defeat. But if Primo survives the first attacks by him, and somehow managed to get in to the middle late rounds, then it's Cooney who could perhaps feel the fight slipping away. But I'll chance it and say Cooney by 7 round ko.
I would pick Carnera, because he had a much better record against world class opposition, but it would be at the back of my mind that Cooney might be a bad stylistic match for him.
I like Undefeated Cooney in this one. Cooneys biggest problem was how to deal with losing. Especially when considering all the pressure he was under from white Americans. Cooney was seen as the "Great White Hope", and white America basically ruined his resolve after that loss. He couldn't get his head on straight,he felt he let so many millions of people down. if their was no Holmes he wins the Championship and probably goes on a long championship run , especially with the management he had and the lack of great threats in the heavyweight division at that time. Holmes beat him physical, but more importantly, ruined him psychologically. Its plainly evident in what happened to him after the Holmes fight. Most posters on this site seem to low rate Cooney because of the Holmes loss, but Cooney could've easily have been a champ if he could deal with losing the right way. And definitely would've been a champ in this era of sorry Heavyweight champions. Cooney would've destroyed the easy to find Canera. Anyone Cooney could hit cleanly he would've wreaked. He would've been able to land on Canera cleanly.... Cooney by Ko whithin 10 rds.
Fight is similar in some ways to the Dino Dennis fight for Gerry. I see the same thing happening here with Cooney landing those bombs early. Geez, look at those telegraphed haymakers Max Baer could land on the guy. Somehow, he has a much worse defense than Cooney even. Actually, Dino Dennis and Carnera is a better fight
