And btw speaking of grudges that's a very good point. Cooney and Holmes buried their hatchet from the 1980's a long time ago, and are very good friends, and see each other frequently. So I don't know what the hell is this guys problem.
brains over brawn. Take a look at the corners----Futch with his guy and Valle with Cooney. Does not get much wider than that. Spinks will nullify that left hook and clean up on the Cooney defense. Actually Spinks can come right over that left hook and really only needs to worry about that left uppercut. but Cooney needs to be on the inside to land that punch. Don't see it.
Either can win this. I am not at all sold on Spinks as a HW & a 1981-82 teetotal & fit Cooney would have a very good chance of blasting Spinks out if Cooney came out fast; but I am not sure that he would have the confidence to do this in a "big" fight though. Folk may criticise Cooney's record but Spinks' HW resume looks VERY skinny to me. He beat a tired, jaded Holmes (35 year old Holmes' 3rd fight in 6 months), won a questionable decision in the rematch; beat the mediocre Tangstad & Cooney when Cooney had significant addictions before losing to Tyson. 81-82 Cooney V the HW Spinks is a tough fight to pick; the outcome may become clearer should the fight get to the 3rd or 4th round.
Spinks by ko round 10. Spinks would have to fight to keep his head in the early stages, Cooney would be trying to take it off! Cooney in command just through his aggressiveness whilst Spinks is busy defending and wary of the big man. He'd shake up Spinks several times and hurt him a lot more than Holmes ever did. But been patient and timing him, Cooney starts getting drawn in to Spinks snare. By round 7,Cooney s face is showing affect s of the right hands that he's getting tagged with. This would be a mini version of Ali v Foreman, with Cooney wearing himself out and Spinks, while not lookin great isn't actually losing. By ten, Cooney s so worn out, it only takes a quick flurry to put him down and out. But it'd be a entertaining match.
Nah, you’re playing it too safe as usual, ferguson. You gotta think outside the box sometimes. Sometimes the lees accomplished puncher can win against the better skilled and far more respected boxer.
I never claimed he was, but that fight showed Spinks clearly could be over powered by a powerful puncher. Cooney was a powerful puncher and was a much better fighter prior to and during the Holmes fight. An aggressive power puncher knocks out Spinks more times than not at Heavyweight .
Ha, ha, calm down boy. You know what I’m taking about.you’re becoming too predictable, always playing it safe with your picks an views like you don’t want to upset anyone or open yourself to criticism. Just be yourself. No need to thank for the free advice, son.
The Cooney who demolished Norton catches Spinks within 5 rounds and demos him. Michael wasn't anywhere near a natural heavyweight and could NOT take that kind of punch. He'd be cute and do his weirdo/awkward dance for the first few rounds. The first time Cooney lands flush, Michael starts to falter (and let's face it, Michael was easily psyched in a negative way by punchers). He'd go down once in the fifth and then the fight gets stopped as he's caught in the corner and massacred. Michael's heavyweight resume wasn't exactly impressive. Not counting well-into-decline Holmes and drug-addled/washed up for years Cooney, the best fighter he faced at that weight by far was Tyson (who didn't have quite the power of Cooney's left hook, though his was faster and more accurate). Look what happened there.
Good to see your following me Jack, it's a real compliment. And you couldn't think out of the box if you tried. I've seen your posts lol, thick as a brick..
I am the box, son. which is why boxing knowledge is my speciality and I’m tougher than any brick. Ha. Anyway glad you’re reading my posts. You definitely be an boxing expert as well if you carry on doing that.
