and like I said Eddie Philips beat Tommy Farr three times before he fought Joe Louis! He was beaten by Sunderland hard man Cast Iron Casey, no more that a middleweight, Before Joe Louis as well. Farr also was outpointed by a 12 fight novis called Dave Carstens just a couple of years earlier than fighting the great Joe Louis. In fact one year before fighting joe Louis, Tommy drew with Jim Wild at welsh area level. And Wild was a man often knocked out by Brian London’s father Jack London,
Of course Louis didn’t suck, I am demonstrating that it’s not as simple as saying Don Cokkell Was overrated just because established opinion overlooks similar shortcomings with other good Contenders like Tommy Farr. Tommy Farr was good. I’ve always liked him. But Don Was good too.
With RM it's either believe what you see (if you know anything about boxing mechanics)/ if not, believe what people who box and train tell you (Mayweather Gym), or you can believe message board posters and writers who know little or nothing about boxing other than history/lineage. I'll stick with what I see. It would be nice if some of these fights could take place and people could bet on the outcome? You probably wouldn't be able to find any of the RM supporters if they had to bet on him. Larry Holmes told the truth after the Spinks fight.
I agree with you was more mocking the anti Rockiesta crowd whom seem to think every other great is perfect.
Turner was 15-16 when RM had his last fight. If he is looking at the past through rose colored glasses, then he is like most people. I don't know anything about Turner, but If he has watched RM on video and still believes what he is saying, I wouldn't want him to train anybody I know.
I rest my case. Why is it a lot of these anti- Marciano guys are also so happy to admit to not watching much Marciano fights? if, as you say, you don’t know anything about Turner, you might want to look at the list of guys Don has trained and worked with before deciding you really wouldn’t want him to train anyone you know.
Turner has made the following statements. The Klitschkos can't fight. Andre Ward is just an average fighter. Floyd Mayweather would be a 6 round fighter back in my day. Pad Work is bull****. Cut men are a con. I was trained by Charley Goldman Turner persuaded Holyfield he could dispense with a cut man ,that he wasnt needed ,and that he could do the job if required. What happened ? Holyfield dispensed with his cut man's services got cut, and Turner was unable to stop the bleeding. Turner has worked in many corners but seldom as the head trainer,He was fired by Holmes,Holyfield,Duddy, Kovalev, and was just a bucket carrier for Larry Holmes when he made his comeback.Turner talks a lot his curmudgeonly státements are usually self serving. I don't think much of him at all.I put him in the class of Al Certo, Lou Duva, and Pepe Correa. A serious proponent of BS baffles brains and it was miuch better back in the day! Another take on Rocky Marciano by Emmanuel Stewart: "Rocky Marciano is one of my favorites," Steward said. "He was short, not very graceful on his feet, and that's putting it mildly, but made up for it with tremendous heart and conditioning. He was always very smart in the ring, and I know people could say what they want about Rocky fighting guys who were past their primes. "But you can't beat guys from other eras who aren't there to fight. All they can be is the best in their era. He was. It is a shame he doesn't get the respect that he deserves today. I was amazed that Rocky would get knocked down and keep coming back." It truly is a shame that he doesn’t get the respect he deserves, Manny.
Phillips and Farr were both inside the lhvy limit ,they were fighting eliminators for that title and for the vacant lhvy title! Farr didnt have 12bs on Phillips!More dishonest spin. You just cant help yourself!
Okay, so you are not keen on Don Turner.. However, the guy has had a life in boxing. Made a living from it. He is a link to a golden age of boxing, who has worked with so many modern greats and has also been voted “trainer of the year” by people within the industry. Don Turners opinion has value. It is based on a lifetime of working with top fighters. It would be foolish to dismiss Don Turner.
