Marciano was awesome. Weather or not he beats fighters who came after him with colossal size advantages is moot to me and doesn’t change what he accomplished in his day. His 49-0 record, impressive KO percentage and wins over a handful of all time greats who were aged but still the best in the world at that time are fine achievements for me.
Marciano was here and gone. He faced a very narrow selection of elite opponents who almost exclusively fit the mold of older, smaller fighter on their last legs as heavies. And no, Rex Layne was not elite. He wouldn't qualify as a 4 rounder post 1980.
I’ll play along.. you’re right... he likely WOULD lose to the larger more athletically gifted heavies of latter periods... but many of those larger, stronger, faster, more athletic men people so highly tout couldn’t go undefeated against even their OWN contemporary piers despite having equal or even sometimes greater advantages to those piers.
That’s bs Layne was a good fighter. Has three really good wins on his resume. A lot more then many others who get held up in high regards. Layne after Marciano well that guy was just showing up to get paid.
Do you really want to review the details around those important victories? Layne was garbage, an undertrained, doughy, slow-twitch, easy to hit guy whose greatest asset was Dempsey's allegiance, which even that faded when Jack got to witness his training regimen.
Agreed. At the time of the Marciano meeting Rex was 23 years of age 6’1”, 193 lbs and with a record of 34-1-2-24. He had never been stopped and his only defeat was to a man he beat 3 times out of 4. Additionally, Layne had wins over Joe Walcott, Bob Satterfield, César Brion and Turkey Thompson.
Typical Layne performance... "Layne Worst Heavyweight to Ever Box in Hub. 23 year old Rex Layne of SLC... climbed into the the Garden ring in the most deplorable physical condition of any heavyweight we have ever seen and was soundly battered and thumped by and untride Roxbury boy. (Trainer) Seamon, usually handy with an excuse... "In all my time as a handler of fighters, I have never seen a guy so badly out of shape as Layne..." Boston American 2/8/52 Mind you that this was a young Layne who weighed in at 199, a mere 3 pounds heavier than he did against Marciano. AP report 7/6/51... "Layne weighed a surprisingly hefty 196 pounds today at a preliminary physical examination at the NYSAC. Layne said he scaled around 191 pounds when he arrived here last Saturday..." AP reporter Ted Smits observations on Layne 7/6/51... "The most surprising thing of all is (Layne's) apparent lack of muscles. He has a fair, smooth skin and his arms appear almost soft."
So Layne was no Evander Holyfield in the physique department. He still looked reasonably fit against Marciano and had a good record to back him.
Bro is short for brother. U don't have to meet people in person to call them bro. U use bro out of respect basically, and it also just means u are comfortable with them and u see them as a friend, or like internet family. We all here for the love of boxing, so we have passion and love for the sport of boxing. Hope that gives u some better insight on the term bro and why it's used.
