You know the names and you know I know the names. Play your game elsewhere. Either you think he’s a good fighter or you don’t know what you’re talking about period.
That’s okay to say now, we can all be wise after the event, but back then some thought Rex was good enough to become a future champion. And with some justification. Having wins on his resume over Satterfeild, Walcott, Brion and Turkey Thompson made him a favourite over Marciano. Without losing to Marciano there is no saying how far Rex Layne might have went. The stuff that came after is less relevant than where Layne was at that time.
He was a limited mauler with decent ,but not great power and a leaky defence,he was also not very quick.I don't think he would have made much of a splash even if Marciano hadnt butchered him. Neither Brion or Thompson were ranked when he beat them ,and Satterfield was only 180lbs.Curiously Brion went into the fight unranked but was ranked at the end of that year [51]
I won’t say that Rex Layne was a “ great fighter. “ but I don’t think he should be classified as a “bum” for the WHOLE duration of his career either. At the time he fought Rocky Marciano he appeared on film to be in pretty good shape, had a very good record, had never before been stopped and had some reasonably good wins. After the Marciano fight he seemed to fall into the abyss. His career track seems similar to that of like a Greg Page where his prime was short lived and his devotion to training limited.
This is complete fabrication from whole clothe. Layne was going nowhere. He got a couple gifts and refused to devote himself to the sport. I think that somewhere along the way his love of the sport was gone. Maybe it was that Satterfield war.
Rex Layne had already made a splash. He beat Thompson, Satterfeild and Jersey Joe Walcott for crying out loud! you are being an after timer here. The reports of Layne not devoting himself properly all come after Rocky beats him. Before Marciano, Layne was getting the build up and winning the right kind of fights to headline Madison Square Garden as the favourite against Marciano and Probably Walcott. Rex wound up being a gatekeeper who hung around the division. We don’t know what he might have been without Rocky.
Nope. Neither Brion nor Thompson were ranked at the time. Thompson had lost his last 2 would have 2 more, lose them and retire. Beating Old Turkey in the middle of a 0-5 cycle of losses not only did not make a splash ,it didn't even cause a ripple. The fact that it was an entertaining war in which both were rocked numerous times,at a time when Thompson was looking for the final exit from the game, just illustrates Layne's limitations!
I asked you politely to name these 3 or 4 good wins, it would be quicker to do that than go all round the houses not doing so. Lose the tantrum fella. WTF is wrong with you?
