I didn't start it Bummy Davis somehow thought it was relevant . I've asked you 4 times for the three or four good wins Layne has .You've repeatedly refused to provide them ,but continually refer to them. That's rather strange imo. I'm not a detractor, I just believe both, Lastarza and Layne were very moderate contenders in a shallow era . Anyone wishing to convince otherwise has to do better than refer obliquely to ,"three or four good wins" and that goes for good old Rollie too! Names would be a start ,but I'm not holding my breath!
The only thing that the uber-protected Lastarza offers this argument is to make Layne appear like the second coming of John L..
Lmao you know the names we just discussed them. You need to hear them from me personally? Satterfield Walcott Charles Brion Hall Thompson Whitlock were all good to decent fighters. I don’t think calling them moderate contenders in a weak era is inaccurate. All I’m saying is they were GOOD fighters . Do you deny that they were GOOD? Otherwise idk what you’re arguing about.
It’s a fine assessment. He was 22 years old hadn’t been the pros that long and taking on a tough opponent. The outcome was close.. so what ?
I saw Lastarza on a old batman series like 5 o'clock on a saturday morning, i guess I'd passed out in my chair lol
LaStarza was a #1 ranked Ring Magazine contender. That makes him somebody of consequence, even if he was very protected in earning that status.
The fact that many saw it as a robbery means that there should be an asterisk over it when it is included in his" 3 or 4 good wins".Or do you disagree? ps Who did Brion beat worth shouting about?
Absolutely. At the same time, a #1 Ring contender who has taken a protected path, is still a very significant fighter! Put it in modern context.
Lastarza was a fair boxer, not particularly quick ,with not especially good footwork, moderate power, and an average chin.He did have very big cojones. Is that also a reasonable assessment? Regarding your point, Cokkell was once number 2.
You’re avoiding the question now. Were they good fighters yes or no? Not one fight was close so I question their whole existence. Were they GOOD yes or no?
Good in relation to whom? To the 1950's? Yes.Good in so far as they managed to achieve a top ten ranking, but far from outstanding. I never avoid questions Mate. Now do you want to reply to mine?
Well Marciano was not that fast compared to a lot of atg boxers. And although a lot of raw speed is a great quality in a boxer. Marciano had about everything else in spades .
