Dempsey UD. Too quick and active for Vitali, especially over 12. Jack gets in and out, underneath those arm punches and lands hard, clean and often.

Vitali controls distance as he always did. He pecks and shifts, leans and counters, wearing out Dempsey. He brings the heavier lumber as the rounds move on. He wins every round until a corner stoppage after 10. Vitali is unscathed.

tough fight- Dempsey fast and difficult fighting out of the crouch and hit very hard- Vitali kept the distance well and his punches took their toll - both men took a solid shot

I'm thinking 12 or 15 rounds depending on what era and a possible battle of attrition.

Could be a close decision if no injuries in the early rounds -

After what Dempsey did to Willard, I can't see even Vitally having an answer for that!

    Not a tough fight.
Willard was never nearly as good as Vitali. Even in his best fight he was well behind after 20 rounds against a past peak Johnson. Only the heat & the older fighter's exhaustion let him win.
By the way, Dempsey was exhausted after his early run at Willard, & the latter's injuries are well documented to have been exaggerated.

Vitali was a top skilled giant.
We are considering the fighter's as they actually were, right? Not what they could have been with training, drugs, etc...

Dempsey at his absolute peak was a small CW.
Actually unless he added muscle he would rehydrate & be a LHW.
His physique/build was actually no bigger than an average modern day MW.

If you could think of NO fighter of this size likely to be competitive with the likes of Vitali...
You are forced to conclude that things progressed.
At least in terms of fighters with great skill & size.

    It would not be close.

So Vitali will just stand there and let Dempsey pound him?

A very interesting fight, especially as these two are two of my favourite heavyweights of all time and both in my top 12.

Demspey never fought anybody quite like Vitali and Vitali likewise.

Dempsey comes out at 100mph waiting for that opening to get in under Vitali's reach and explode into an assualt of hooks never matched in the history of the heavyweight division which shows in his all time record for round 1 KO's. Tyson came close but his style more of a mixture between Dempsey, Patterson and Frazier. His bobbing and weaving and lateral movement makes it difficult for Vitali to get off his 1, 2's. Plus Demspey's prime stamina will keep him moving for the 12 rounds easily if it goes that far. Vitali never met anybody as intense and Dempsey's ability to close the ground quickly will cause problems for Vitali, plus as tough as nails.

Vitali with a chin of iron (Willard was known to have a great chin) and stamina to let him throw a huge volume of punches all day long, but his accuaray can be questioned and vs the movement of Dempsey he will be missing and glancing. Vitali was well able to use his height advantage and like a cobra spring out of his defensive stance to throw a barrage of punches. His big advantage over Dempsey was his ability to adapt to a fight and Dempsey never fought a 6.6+ fighter as technically as gifted as Vitali.

This could be finished by a TKO early either way or it will go the distance and to the judges cards either way.

Verdict: Dempsey's entire style was designed for fighting bigger opponents and he never lost to a bigger man, Vitali tapped out vs a defensive genius Chris Byrd.

Dempsey wins by SD beside the bloody mess of Vitali.

    This is purely disingenuous claptrap.

Dempsey never faced a superheavy who was in prime Vitali's league. Hell, Dempey wasn't in Vitali's league. Vitali is not a 37 year old cowhand who picked up boxing in his late 20's. Vitali started combat sports in his early teens and was an accomplished kickboxer as well as boxer. He also had more than the hint of athleticism about him, not some retired old rodeo wannabe.

Dempsey could only bumrush well,... bums. A lightheavy like Tommy Gibbons, who didn't even earn the right to fight for the HW title, quickly defused Dempsey bumrush. An athlete like Vitali, with his ridiculous dimensions and a lifetime of combat sports, is going to quickly decipher and stifle Dempsey's simple attack.

Vitali "tapped out" to Byrd, who was 10 times the defensive fighter that Dempsey was, because of injury. Sure, if either becomes that injured, the other likely wins.

I'd guess a UD with Vitali on top. He'd peck away at Dempsey, who would bend and duck most of those jabs, but enough jabs followed by overhand rights would land to give Vitali the edge. Dempsey would try like hell to KO the big Ukrainian but to no avail. I bet it would have been an action packed and exciting fight!

But the other Klit...Wlad...I think Dempsey KO's him because Wlad did not have the chin that Vitali did. And Wlad would not engage enough to win by points. I could see Emmanual Steward screaming at Wlad in the corner "hit this little guy!" and Wlad not responding because he was getting beat up.
