https://imgur.com/gallery/ABnCnpe Newest James Toney nuthuggers article. Prettiest performance in boxing history.
Toney was amazing this fight for a guy literally tailor made for him. One of the most painfully dominant displays ever. I still feel sorry for Barkley watching this. Total mismatch.
Poor old Barkley was a bit damn shot and should've been at light heavy still. In fact, he shouldn't of still been fighting but for blowing all his money after Hearns II. That said it was the most skilful display of technical boxing I've seen. Toney himself should've been at light heavy soon after and more disciplined.
As pointed out above Barkley was shot to pieces. This is similar to the overawe typical of nubes when seeing Ali Williams.
Nope Iran beat Hearns and Van Horn not long ago. It was more a matter of Iran's style being taylor made for James. If only that version of Toney would have fought Roy. I guess he would still have lost in a more competitive fight though.
I followed Iran religiously from the late 80's. I wasn't the only one who noticed his massive deterioration in this fight. He had hit a wall and it showed in the following months, losing to the likes of Adolpho Washington. He was practically a punching bag for Maske. With his style and lifestyle, and heading toward his mid-30's, this was bound to happen.
In the 6th round, if memory serves, Toney did something that I had read about but hadn't seen. He caught a Barkley jab in the the palm of his right glove, then followed the jab home with a right hand, which he landed.
It was an awesome performance. He slowly and methodically beat up Barkley so badly and left his face so mangled, that it could have been used as an argument by the AMA to ban boxing. I have never really liked Toney - but, objectively, it was a great display of boxing technique. As such, although the author obviously is a Toney fan, I would not necessarily define him, base on this article, as a "Toney Nuthugger." I believe any objective, knowledgeable boxing fan would see this performance as awesome.
It is still speculation on your part. On paper he was not shot at all . In fact he was the betting favourite to beat Toney as far as I can remember. That beng said, I feel that there is some truth to wat you said. I think it was a combination of Barkley being on the decline and Toney's masterful performance. I think after the Toney fight, Iran further deterioated. He also had eye surgeries then I think
The massive punishment Barklely absorbed in the Toney fight could very well have led to the deterioration leading to the Washington loss. I liken this fight to the second Qawi/Saad Muhammad fight. Both Saad and Barkley were starting to fade, but their fights against Qawi and Toney used them up and they were shot afterwards. Barkley had not taken any beatings shortly before the Toney fight that would have used him up. This fight used him up.
This. As a grown ass adult, in the mid-1990's, I had one boxing poster on my wall. It was a KO centerfold of James Toney. Make of that what you will.
Come on, Darrin Van Horn! He was welterweight and **** HIMSELF. Barkley looked so slow in that fight. God knows how he even made weight. Hearns wasn't near his best in 91 at 175.
