I agree with Sauhund here. Tyson folds his tent fast vs Sonny and is taken out in 1 or 2. Like Sauhund said, a rank coward.

Liston would be in Mike's head during the refs instructions. Liston would stare right through him.

You could say that Mike would slip Listons excellent (but not quick) jab, but then Liston might take Mike's head off with an uppercut if he got inside.

Yeah, he sure stared right thru a green light punching Clay...twice...I guess all the acid like substance on his gloves did not work either .. who at that point in his career was a talented but unproven contender and N O B O D Y predicted what he would become later in his career.

You would not have put two cents on Clay if you would have been there......hardly anybody did.

I think Tyson edges him in speed, power and agility. Liston dwarfs him with a mental advantage. What he did when he came up against Williams showed how he dealt with a more powerful foe. While Cleveland isn't on Tyson's level..I am simply viewing how both fighters handled adversity.

Tyson showed us a glimpse in Ruddock II. After breaking Razor's jaw I think? Ruddock wouldn't quit and started landing that smash- his long range uppercut, Tyson resulted to blatant fouls.
1st- After the bell rang, Tyson threw two punches at Ruddock
Tyson had the first of three points deducted in round 4 the 9th and 10th round.
To be fair Ruddock lost a point in the 8th for hitting Tyson after the bell.
ROUND 11 both fighters gave low blows, but Lane said KNOCK THAT $#$#! off!

To me, that is Tyson. Without Rooney..at least Rooney..if not Cus, Tyson had no mental edge other than smelling for fear during the instructions.
Liston had no fear & if he did, didn't show.
Tyson has the physical tools to beat Liston, but again without Cus or Rooney...not even Giachetti could harness that mental strength Mike needed to win.

He fouls out against Liston once his asthma kicks in...4,5 rounds have completed and there is Sonny lookin' at him on his stool across the ring, watching Tyson's demeanor shrivel up like George Kastanza with pool shrinkage

    Thats exactly the point.

In other words: Would Tyson go through the last of Listons opponents in comparable fashion? Valdes, Patterson, King, Williams, Machen? Keep in mind Sonny had already lost one fight until then, with a 70% KO-ratio. Tyson knocked all but four of his opponents out (90% KO-ratio).

Then ask yourself this: Would Sonny go through the guys Tyson fought (all equal size or bigger than himself) in the same fashion as Tyson? He beat one or two fellows in that category (medicore chin Williams). Berbick KO2, Tubbs in 2, Thomas in 6, only one to stop Holmes in 4, rumble with tall SHWs and KO them? Bullet proove against big hitters like Smith, man mountain Bruno or Ruddock?

Its a total guess how Liston would do under such circumstances. On a rational basis, from what each of this fellows did, you can´t pick Liston over Holmes, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe or Lewis. His resume does simply not allow it.

The mythical Sonny " Ugly Bear" Liston......

Was prime rolling over Skinnies and a glass chinned Light Heavy but was washed up , literally within around a year, lol, when he met a green unproven Clay who was the under dog and none zip nada of said experts would have put a dime on Clay that he would stop aka pulling a quit job on this Monster Liston.

But it gets better than this, slipped the Doc a couple of bucks to verify the shoulder "injury" after he quit to milk a rematch.......and rolled around on the floor after a phantom punch providing a Oscar worthy performance, remember"Get up you bum".......yeah thats Liston.

Wait, wait......redemption.....no......Liston talked the talk but never walked the walk ever again, was never back into ANY Title contention , simply fought subpar cannon fodder and got himself one punch ko'ed against one never was opponent......never ever fought anybody with a pulse again and was a non entity in the Heavyweight Division after the two Clay quit jobs before he OD'ed in his bedroom. Nothing but facts.

But but but the Mob, lol,so they pick up a far more powerful well known mega shot caller named Jimmy Hoffa from a parking lot never to be seen again but they go thru some elaborate complicated Drug story to get rid of a washed up Ex fighter...please....like Hoffa he would have taken a car ride and ended up in the Desert never to be found again. fact.

So lets see, Tyson goes , after cleaning out a entire division being the P4P fighter with numerous title defenses, out on his shield against Buster......Liston quits against a green unproven Clay on his stool.after ONE title defense........... a washed up Tyson picked up a few belts fighting so so opposition and gets stopped after a long jail stint in the 11th hour by a TKO.....Liston rolls around the canvas in the first round trying to get a Emmy.....quit job number two........Tyson becomes a crazy part time fighter more effected by the law then other fighters and beat some fringe contenders in Botha and Golata, ..Liston got polaxed by a Nobody.....while being a Tyson impersonator he scored another payday with Lennox Lewis aka title shot while Liston was busy chasing the Golder dragon who ultimately made him exit this world.......Tyson on the other end is now a major pot peddler making sure the public stays dumb while smoking his products.

Obvious conclusion : Tyson is was and always will be a success story in and out of the Ring, hated or loved vs Sonny who could just not deal with any success..

Liston would absolutely not be afraid of Mike. Mike didn't like that. Liston also had a great jab and uppercut. Mike didn't like that.

On the other hand, Mike was faster and was probably about as powerful (Liston was a bit closer to Foreman in terms of hand speed, though certainly faster overall than BG). Mike also probably had a better defense.

The problem is intimidation. Mike would be. Mike gets floored then stopped in 5 or 6, which is about what I'd give him against prime Foreman. I think Liston's jab would make Mike start giving up after the first couple of rounds.

That said, I do see Mike as a top ten ATG, while I put Liston just behind him at #11. Go figure.

    H2H? Tyson takes him out.

Legacy wise? Honestly, I think Liston is the most overrated heavyweight on these boards and it's not particularly close.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how he'd rank over Tyson. Mike is significantly more accomplished and did it versus larger and higher caliber fighters.

Let's see; Tyson lost all his signature fights, Got knocked out by a bum at the height of his prime, quit like a coward in his last 2 fights, disgraced himself by biting someone's ear off cause he couldnt handle somebody not only standing up to him bit beating his ass (again) while doing so, ducking a 45 years old man who's best days were literally over 20 years beforehand, and you can't even see where one would make a case that Tyson is inferior to Liston.

And Liston's the overrated one

Head to head and best v best, im gonna pick sonny. Liston moved forward behind that massive Jab whilst Tyson gloves up, side to side, at least in his prime. The first few rounds I believe would be all Tyson, his faster hands exploding all around liston.
He'd hurt liston but one thing liston did was hit back, and it wouldn't take long before Tyson starts to realize his opponents going nowhere. Sonny s Jab, his reach with it and his power behind it, and his style of fighting starts to break mike down. As he loses confidence he trys to grab liston and is smashed with uppercut and body shots. We'd see Tyson become physically smaller as liston become s more confident. This fight will be about each man's will, more than anything and Tyson’s is broken down here. He'll take a lot of shots but eventually, Mike's body can't take any more and he'll be dropped and cut and swollen, he'll be counted out in 10.
