Who do you rate higher than Roy Jones Jr. h2h....

I realised that when I scrolled upwards.

 

Despite his greatness, as Don Dumphy mentioned, Bennie had a plethora of "no contest" fights.

 

I think Roy did too.

 

That's all quite fair.

 

I'm not sure just how much of the weight drained stuff i am prepared to palate. His win over Toney and the ridiculously dominant way it was achieved could well be above so many other greats best wins. I'm not sure Monzon has a win to match it and am not sure if even Hagler's win over Hearns does. It's a big win.

 

I wasn't either but, looking into it, there are few in the sport, who would deny Toney was having significant weight issues at 168. I've read interviews with Toney, in which he takes the blame for his weight crisis, but the fact is he had these issues in the build up to his previous match, against Charles Martin.

Moreover, Roy didn't make the fight until Toney announced his intention to move up to 175, (which I don't doubt would have been a move to help ease these issues). So, I'm content that there is credence to the claims made.

So were Manny Pacquiao's wins over Oscar de la Hoya and Miguel Cotto, but I take the context of the bouts into account; especially, when considering the scale of a win, in comparison to those of other greats.

In addition, I'd say one swallow doesn't make a summer, in the head-to-head stakes; particularly, if there's reason to believe the swallow in question had one of its wings clipped.

Sorry JT - We'll have to disagree there. I don't consider it anywhere near Hagler's win over Hearns and I don't recall anyone at the time making such a claim.

Are better than Jones at their best weight. Jones never faced that gut check test at any weight.
That is the ultimate proof of a fighters greatness, along with skills, physicality, desire etc. Jones may have passed the gut check test, or he may have turned into Camacho Sr. After his gut check test.
It's easy to look great against sub par competition , fighters that didn't have the ability to truly push him. But what would've happened in his prime if one of his opponents had the ability to land the right hand Rasario landed on Camacho Sr?
Before Camacho fought Rasario he was Jones Jr. A beyond gifted fighter that out classesd everyone he faced. He dominated everyone as Jones Jr would years later.
But one big shot from Rasario completely changed his path to greatness. But one thing Camacho did prove, he could take a beat down and had a good chin, as was proven in his loss to Chavez.....
Jones never fought that fighter that may have brought the best or worse of him out. So if he didn't do it, how can he receive credit for it?
Their are many fighter with less athletic ability, but proved much more than Jones proved..
It's the most glaring "What if" of his career.
As we later saw once his super human atheletiscim started to slow, he was getting knocked out by 2nd -3 rd rate fighters. So his ability to take a shot became a glaring weakness. "What if" a fighter as capable ad Monzon, or Hagler fugured away to reach him? How about a fighter that turned boxing matches into a brawl, like Lamotta or Tiger could? " What if".....
Prime ATG fighters would've figured away to test Jones Jr. He may have passed the test. He could've failed miserably. But the problem is we don't know. But in my opinion if he never proved it, how can he receive credit for it. The "Gut Check" test is just as , if not more important than his Super human athletic ability .
