Should Plant have taken the Canelo fight?

    If it truly was 3-4x his regular purse
    It’s a great opportunity why the eff not?

    Not if he didn't feel he could be 100 percent and wants every chance of getting the W. That fight will still be there if he keeps on winning.

    yes should have taken it.

    he might get injured, car crash or something and the payday is gone.
    These boxers need to start taking fights and purses when offered

    annoys the hell out of me

    Yes, he should have taken the fight and extra money on top of that to take a dive too. Why not ? He can bounce back anyway. Then let Canelo fight a Cruiserweight that will take a dive too and then HW and we can end that circus afterwards.

    Canelo can compete at 160, 168 and 175... and while he might just be blowing hot air, Oscar says Plant wont get another opportunity to fight Canelo now.

    When you factor in the chance of Plant losing an upcoming fight, possibility of injuries (hes already had a derailed year due to one), other available options for canelo spanning 3 weight divisions, among other variables, its actually not improbable that Plant really wont receive this opportunity again.

    Sometimes, if not all the time, to get transcending opportunities like fighting a Canelo, you have to make concessions. The fight being 9 weeks away in this instance would have been the tradeoff to having one of if not the biggest fight, biggest platform, biggest paycheck, and one of the best tests as a competitor, that he will likely have in his entire career, in an actual winnable fight, in which hed be the bigger man in.

    The list is long of other great fighters that took big fights on similar timeframes.

    Its not like hes 34 years old or coming off a war either. Hes fresh, in his prime, coming off a fairly smooth routine victory.

    So ya... I think he made a mistake here and more than that I think its a bizarre one to make for a 27 year old ambitious champion.

    What I hope happens is Plant keeps winning, keeps improving, keeps getting a bigger name, and hopefully Oscar decides to give him another shot in a year and the fight is even bigger and better. Thats the only ideal scenario now. But waiting just seems like a pointless and large risk when the opportunity is there now in what is a winnable fight.

    Possibly , he mightn't have been allowed by Al Hayman though.

    Duckum Smith on the other hand should have absolutely taken the fight when it was offered. If Canelo fights Saunders after been avoided by Duckum , then you gotta respect that since Saunders is a bad match-up style wise and could potentially cause the upset.

    The Gennday rubber match is unlikely as Canelo is staying at 168 , so I think they will make a deal with Saunders.

    To be fair to Plant he'd be making a huge leap up in class against an opponent he'd have to spark out cold in a KO of the Year type fashion to get a draw against.

    Yes he should have. He's not a household name, no one is clamoring to see him fight, he can't crack an egg. His best win against his best competition was just overshadowed by a solid weight dropping journeymen. I don't know what kinda hubris infused concoction he was drinking that led him to believe he was holding any legitimate cards for negotiation.

    Now he's gonna end up getting up ended for less money against Benavidez.

    I think maybe Uncle Haymon may have convinced him that taking the biggest payday of his career wasn't in his best interest.

    once in a life time opportunity to make that much money and possibly upset the #1 fighter in the sport. A lot of fighters would take that fight on 9 days notice and give it all they got.
