Johnson did better v better fighters aside from Jones at 168 and Roy would have toyed with Minter too, Alan looked completely out of his depth v Hagler and Johnson would have done much better v Marvin, Toney would have destroyed Minter easily too, Johnson was the better fighter, all Minter really had was a pesky jab even though he shook Hagler with a very good right hand, I don`t think he would have hurt Johnson who rocked Toney, Johnson by late TKO.
My man Minter would win this by decision. Provided he doesn't cut, but I don't pick cuts in fantasy H2H.
My sparring partner McVey will confirm that Minter had a dreadful tendency to totally lose the head if he got tagged with a good shot and go wading into a tear up. Have a look at the first 2 fights with Kevin Finnegan or the first Gratien Tonna fight. If Alan can keep his cool and stick to his Boxing behind a very stiff southpaw jab, he's got a good chance of getting the nod here. If he gets tagged and goes bananas, Johnson probably stops him .
Minter seemed to learn his lesson re temperament between Tonna 1 & 2 - I think Minter's "true" peak was between his KO of the decent Sandy Torres on the undercard of Ali-Leon Spinks 1 fight up to & including Vito 2. In the Hagler fight Minter reverted to his old gung-ho self; no doubt caught in the massive hype surrounding that fight, he clearly under-estimated MMH. At his absolute best Minter was a cool, calm, classy southpaw truly world class boxer-puncher with a decent dig & a good chin; cuts generally weren't a factor in this spell of his career, no doubt due to the calmness he displayed at this time. It's worth noting that in the 3rd Finnegan fight (post Tonna 1) Alan scored his most convincing win over Kevin. There's every chance that, at 160, a top form Minter could win this on points, especially with a same day weigh-in. If the weigh-in was the day before, the pendulum swings to Johnson, the naturally heavier man, imo.
Another fair point. I like Collins but his skill set was very basic. He was fortunate to be around toward the twilight of Benn and Eubanks' careers. As tough as they come but Johnson and McCallum showed his limitations.
Agree with this LG but I also think that Johnson (& particularly) McCallum would have shown up Benn's & Eubank's limitations too!
