Why do I have to support somebody just because they happened to be born on the same bit of land I was?
I suppose to me, its more than, " just a bit of land ", clearly not everybody feels the same. To have the UK holding all of the heavyweight titles between two men, setting up the biggest fight in our history would seem to me a reason to feel some semblance of national pride though. National pride is probably a dirty concept to you, but I find it to be a positive emotion.
I never get national pride. Not that I think it's a dirty concept; I just don't understand it. I'm from the UK. I like living here, but I'm proud of things I've achieved or done. I can take pride in doing some good work for example, or passing an exam when I was a kid. I can't really be proud of where I happened to be born. I had just as much to do with that fact as someone who was born anywhere else had. I would say as well that in general I support England/Britain/UK in sporting events. But I tend to think that's more a growing up with them thing in the same way you support your local football team. That doesn't mean I have to automatically do the same for everyone from here. I think Fury is an absolutely colossal ars*hole of a man. Ask me which things I like least in people and I'd probably cobble together a deeply bigoted, hyper-religious, conspiracy spouting habitual liar. Why should I support a guy like that?
I have you living somewhere down in the midlands/down south, around 30-45 due in part to your reference points mainly to 90’s boxing. You’re in a job role that isn’t anything to do with labouring/building, pretty much anything where there isn’t an environment that’s laddish and arguably parochial as that grates you and you like to rise above that. I wonder if it’s an office type environment. That’s my amateur psychology attempt of the week. Very vague but I wonder if I’ve got any of it right. I’m warming to you, Hayers. Obviously, I think you’re as mad as a bag of frogs, but it wouldn’t be as fun if you wasn’t on here. Big kisses buttercup xxx
I think vague's an understatement to be fair. I'm basically anything except a teenager or a middle aged northern builder!
Can see Fury winning on points or Wilder getting the big k.o but for some reason my overriding feeling is Wilder will quit on his stool between 9 and 11, probably citing a made up injury when in truth he will just want no more punishment/ be gassed to f**k! Then the injury will be used to sell a third fight later in the year!!
I enjoy boxing odds, (although I never really bet), in a historical sense. I think after the event we can almost immediately forget what the general mood was like before the fight. It seems genuinely insane today to think Tyson Fury ducked David Price for example, but the bookies had Price a very warm 2/7 - 1/4 favourite for that fight when it was mooted for the British title. The last major fight I can recall where both fighters were this close was probably Froch Kessler I.
