Love the format. One of my favourite fighters of all time. The fact Veit makes the list is a bit of an indictment of Calzaghe’s resume though.
Promotionally Joe was so badly promoted. He was unlucky too era wise as he came to fruition back end of Eubank/Benn/Bruno era on terrestrial tv. If he was around now he would be a massive ppv star in UK and Oscar would be keeping Canelo well away from him.
Yeah, terrible career for Joe considering his ability. Once you're past Kessler, Lacy, Eubank and Hopkins the pickings are so slim. I suppose you could have gone with Reid albeit it was a close fight. The talent Calzaghe had should have been represented by a far better opponent in this series than Veit but I suppose you can't rewrite history. Said it before and will say it again, but the writing was on the wall for Joe after his big arrival on the scene after so long against Lacy, only to then waste two fights straight after.
The other fight that springs to mind is Byron Mitchell, that was exciting while it lasted and he was a better fighter than Veit. Would’ve been a unification too had he not been jobbed vs Ottke the fight before.
The Pride of Wales and another brought through to World Level by Hall of Fame Promoter Frankie Warden - hence the negative Matchroom FC views on the thread. One of the UK's finest ever fighters who remained undefeated even when fighting with significant hand issues his whole career. Fook me some people would pick holes in a bricked up rectum on here.
The story, right from how Enzo ended up in Wales and got into boxing through to his sons career ending 46-0 with multiple World Titles, all from that shed and mountain runs, it's f**king beautiful isn't it. We get it fed to us how humble and down to earth certain types are but this father and son combination is as good as it gets.
Couldn't say it any better. For all those who seek to traduce his achievments I say, if Joe & Enzo's story isn't one you can love or at the very least respect then you need to check how your brain is wired.
Enzo Calzaghe was world class as well and their achievements simply incredible - was at the Evans Ashira and Kessler fights. Cracking weekends in Cardiff and a great city for watching boxing.
Being born in Cardiff it filled me with immense pride, wish I could have seen it live, I've got the DVD though!!! Love Calzaghe, proper boxer, if anything the injuries improved him, if you can carry on winning despite losing a substantial amount of power you're special. Thanks again for the video @Boxing First
Three World Champions produced from a glorified shed and an old man who took people to levels people thought impossible.
The Calzaghe v Evans Ashira fight at the Cardiff International Arena had Kell Brook, Amir Khan, Nathan Cleverley, Kerry Hope and even the legend Tony Booth on the undercard. Incredibly the Khan fans left BEFORE the Calzaghe fight. Great night of boxing in those days and a good session in Cardiff afterwards.
I was at the Kessler fight too it was amazing! So tense Kessler was/is a tough man with powerful shots and took the early parts of the fight. Joes stamina, heart and tenacity is beyond compare.
