Tyson is brash like Ali. He's an interesting person and he does inspire people with his story. As a fighter there is vague similarities in style. I like the way Fury just fought the other nite. Too bad he didnt employ the Kronk style from the beginning of his pro career
At 31, Fury's only important wins were over old man Klitschko and (the admittedly great victory over) Wilder. Not that impressive. He defended his title six times, mostly not in particularly impressive fashion. At 31, Ali had beaten Liston ,Patterson, and a prime Ken Norton. He defended his title successfully 9 times, more often than not in sensational fashion. I realize this reasoning is flawed, but I felt it needed to be said. Fury is causing a sensation mostly because of his weirdo personality, plus his unusually light punching (relative to his size) style. Ali caused a sensation in the 60s because of his supernaturally fast boxing ability and way with words.
I can agree with this. I doubt Ali's stardom and accomplishments can ever be met by a modern day fighter.Anyway, Fury has the potential to become a superstar
There are actually a lot of similarities -both uses footwork and erratic movent to dazzle their opponents and the crowd. -both are big trash talkers -both rely more on speed than power and have good head movement -both undefeated in their primes. Both beat a dominant champion whom many believed they didn't have a prayer of dethroning. -both were stripped off their titles. Both became infamous in the press for very brash controversial statements. Both were unapologetic in their religious beliefs. -both took 3 years off and then had 2 tune ups before fighting for the title again. -Both came up short in their attempts to regain the title (close decision loss for Ali, draw for fury). Both were dropped by their rivals in the 1st fight and beat them in the rematch (Frazier, Wilder).
Damn fine summary. Also: -both have top-notch determination. -both have underappreciated physical strength. -both can hit plenty hard when they sit on their punches.
Skip Bayless said he hasn't been that shocked at a boxing result since Ali vs Foreman. Not saying Fury is the modern day Ali , but Fury has crossed over into the mainstream and made HW boxing front page news as the likes of Ali and Mike Tyson did before him. His iconic undertaker moment won't be forgotten for a long time , if ever , so i thnik he has left a mark on the sprt that won't be forgotten like Ali. But again , Ali was in a leauge of his own and his historical significance just can't be matched.
Tyson Fury, Jack Johnson, and Muhammad Ali to me, are the most dynamic fighters in the history of the HW division that I can think of. All three of them combined stylistic variance with success to a degree that isn't matched by any other HW I can think of. Fury started his career by using his size, strength, and heart to out muscle and out punch his opponents. It wasn't until the Klitschko fight where you really saw this Roy Jones-esque fluidity and elusiveness. Then he got his eye busted open against Wallin, and decided to fight in close, and did so wonderfully if you ask me. Even against Wilder, you saw two different styles across both fights. Incredible fighter. Supreme boxing IQ. Unstuck in one particular style, dynamic, aware, and intuitive.
****ing hell, I just posted this on the general forum but Fury has two wins of any note on his record against really old once good Wlad and old never any good Deontay. Credit to him for his career but his best wins other than those two have been against the likes of Chisora and Cunningham, complete nobodies in any other era. A win against one trick pony Wilder, who IMO would've been KO'd by any number of former heavyweights at any stage in his career, and ancient Wlad, again, credit where it's due, but you can only compare records, you can't get carried away, and you can't compare Fury with Ali and Louis or even Lennox or Holmes or anyone of that level.
Very true, he cut up poor Henry Cooper in their May 21 1966 title bout, Ali won by TKO 6, saw it live on ABC's Wide World Of Sports. He sure was not floored in this one.
I wonder if Fury will start predicting the round in which his opponent will fall. Or will he float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
well we can go a step further here. fury has openly made homophobic, antisemitic and anti abortion comments and tried to hide these behind a veil of his supposed religion. i find it very awkward that this has all been swept under the carpet following his elevation in fame following his recent success.
some similarities - Never expected Fury to beat Vlad K - Never expected Ali to beat Liston Both men had 2-3 years off for different reasons but both men came back strong Both men brash Both men had an Irish Great Grandfather & lineage Ali shocked the world vs undefeated Foreman Fury shocked the world vs Undefeated Wilder Style change Ali from mover to rope a dope style Change Fury from boxer to walk down puncher both Ali & Fury are top 10 heavyweights on will to win and a plan to do it. Fury adapted style change vs same opponent better than Ali's inability vs Frazier and Norton but Ali did it vs Spinks Both men showed heart getting dropped and cut
I am prepared to accept that Fury was ill when he said these things. I met him last year and found him to be a genuinely warm, engaging guy. He can't un-say what was said and I would totally understand anyone who was disturbed by comments that any reasonable person would find unacceptable.
