Which other Brit heavies down the years could have finished Wilder in 7 rounds or even less?

That`s because Bruno gassed, `spoon was really sloppy in that bout, you could see what was coming, his body was more flabby than when he fought Thomas and Holmes.

pre-steward Lewis would have been destroyed by Fury who is far better than Bruno and cCall, if Bruno could outbox Lewis until being stopped, then Fury could have done it with ease, he moves far better than Frank did and is far harder to hit, he would have boxed Bruno`s ears off.

Absolutely, John. I remember our own Graham Houston saying of him 'he doesn't just know the ropes, he wove them', albeit the late 30s version who was going up against Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

That would be a bit much of the version Frank fought but even then he was defensively savvy with a good jab and overhand right, decent uppercut. He was a Philly boy - strike one for Tim right there - who had been Ali's sparring partner in his teens/early 20s and given Larry Holmes hell when Larry was quite near his prime and Tim was a bit green. Tim could box allright. The Bonecrusher rematch notwithstanding, Tim showed all the fundamentals. Wilder is a crude blaster imo, not a technician. He's a very effective blaster - so long as his gear to wear into the ring isn't too heavy - but I see little evidence of technical skills. When Fury backed him up, he didn't seem able to fight back. Not saying Tim beats him but it would be Deontay's power rather than skill that would see him through.

How do you equate Frank being 'trash' while agreeing that he should have been ahead on the cards vs an excellent fighter in Witherspoon?Frank had his limitations but 'trash' is harsh to say the least.

Bruno, pre-Steward Lewis and McCall were nowhere near great.

Witherspoon was not excellent against Bruno, he was very sluggish and overweight, he just had a great chin and good power in that fight and caught a tiring fighter with a suspect jaw.

Bruno was never a great fighter ,but he was an honest one ,who always did his best.
Lewis was a very good fighter from the start who became a great one.
Wilder has never been better than a good fighter, and with over 40 fights on his clock and at 34 years old he ain't gonna get any better!

No but I was listening to Jim Watt and Reg Gutteridge on the radio and that`s the impression I got, I also watched the fight on British TV the next day and that was the mantra coming from Brit pundits in the years that followed, it became Bruno`s mantra, always ahead in world title fights, gassing than getting stopped and the non-title Smith bout, the exception being the first and second Tysonbouts, and all you hear Brit pundits talk about is 'that' hook that Bruno wobbled Mike with and of how he could have finished him but didn`t have the killer instinct, yawn.
