Shameless that a 38 yr old Champion retires, how in the hell is that shameless? Vitali lost his bout against Lewis even when Lewis was not in best of shape. Lewis achieved Olympic gold, was a very successful world heavyweight champion, had avenged the defeats by the 2 boxers who had beaten him, and had earned a fortune, plus he left the sport with his braincells in tact. Retirement from getting punched in the head, at the age he did sounded mighty reasonable to me. There is a good life outside of boxing for Lewis, not least going home healthy and wealthy to his wife a runner up in Miss Jamaica contest
I fully agree. However, King's main purpose behind that is to keep things in-house. It really had nothing to do with Tyson "ducking" Lewis in any way. King is the one to blame here, not Tyson. The Seldon fight might have been pathetic, but it got him the WBA title and a massive payday all in 2 minutes. That Seldon fight is a solid example of how King operates. It's either a guaranteed victory for his fighter or it's against a tough opponent that's in-house. If it's not both, then it's against a fighter he has obligations on hidden in the contract.
I put this together years ago, but if I remember correctly, I think it had to do with Eddie Booker being part of the Black Murderers row which was systematically ducked by much of the boxing elite. I might have thought that if people could accuse Ray Robinson of ducking Charlie Burley then maybe the same should hold for Charles. Partly, this was a duck list, and partly it was a "fights that never got made for one reason or another" list. They were both top operators at the same weight from say '40-'43 but they never got down.
Ahh, that makes more sense. I've never once heard Charles/Booker proposed, and as the resident Charles fan, I was baffled. Yeah, I just don't think it was on the cards. Charles was really green in 40/41, and in 42/43 both were fighting really hectic schedules against several HOFers and ATGs. Charles had no issues fighting the Murderer's Row. He fought Burley, Bivins and Marshall a total of 9 times, not to mention Moore, Smith, Ray, Oberlin, Basora, Baroudi, Yarosz, Maxim ect. The guy fought all the ducked fighters, and that's just below HW... Although if Charles had stuck around in the mid 40s instead of going to war and taking a year out; I'd have loved to see him vs LaMotta, Booker, Lytell and Williams. Give him those wins, plus maybe one more big win at HW and you're looking at the P4P GOAT.
I'll agree and add, look at Holyfield. Once great champion. Won a triumphant victory over Mike Tyson when no one gave him a chance to win. Never won a proper title after the loss to Ruiz. Continued to box well into his forties and ended up with a worse record than Mike Tyson, who knew when to quit. Holyfield can barely speak these days he's been hit so much. Lewis went out on top with his faculties and wits still about him
Great list, though I don't think Larry Holmes ducked Michael Dokes in 1982. Nor Ray Leonard of Aaron Pryor in 1984.
Same as Sugar Ray and Pryor. He’d signed to fight but the eye injury and lay up had ruined the potential match. Shame too, what a fight that would have been.
Kahn v Brook Hatton v Witter It don't get bigger than them two imo mate. Both cases they were the same nationality, same weight, both champs and the public were screaming for it and both cases would've made everyone mega money, Kahn and Hatton's fault, forget the bull that they didn't want to give them a payday, they couldn't bare losing to the opposition THATS IT, imo that's a little scared
