I think I've spoken my piece with him at least as far as this thread goes. Talking about past events to me is fun, but not life and death. When I get upset with something, I try to step back before I click "Post Reply" and tone down some of my more vitriolic first-impression rhetoric. Getting myself or other posters upset is not the reason I contribute to this forum.

The only time I argue with some people on this forum it 90 percent of the time involves Marciano or someone whom had a connection with him somehow (Layne, Moore, Walcott etc).
Everyone has their particular heroes on this site. Lot of Holmes fans here, Johnson, Foreman, Wlad fans. But the only person who elicits such raw emotions out of people is Marciano for some reason lol. Idk what it is. He was a great fighter...not a good one a great one. He has holes in his resume. Which all HW fighters barring Ali and Louis do. I see no problem with picking Marciano over modern fighters but understand if people don’t believe he could do it (I think he would be fine). I only get mad when some try to completely disparage the man and his accomplishments and they fail to hold other fighters to that high of a bar.
This particular fight I’ve probably picked Marciano and Liston to win in this very thread because I hold both men’s fighting ability in high regards. But to each their own.

Agreed. I had my arguments with him as well but he was a gentleman and a well informed man

I'm going to be giving it a rest soon, I'm not enjoying it anymore and haven't for some time. There are just too many idiots here now, and it seems a new one surfaces every week.
The quality of poster has taken a drastic down turn in the last 2 years and some fine posters no longer bother.
I've learned quite a bit here from various posters and am grateful to them. But I find making threads increasingly unrewarding, when you have pedantic trolls who only want to derail your threads while contributing nothing themselves.
I also find myself getting frustrated with the lack of even rudimentary knowledge from some of the recent ones. It's certainly no crime to not be up to speed with the subject, but these newer guys ignore facts and just incessantly repeat the same fan boy garbage .I shall be travelling for the best part of March first the South of France ,then the Carribean so it will be a good opportunity to take a hiatus.
I wish all the good guys the very best ,they know who they are , as for the dross, I can only hope they improve, but I find the prospect exceedingly doubtful .I'll look in from time to time, but I think my time as a regular here is now limited.

I feel very much the same way Macca. The level of knowledge in the Classic forum gets closer to the dreaded General section every day.

Whatever you do mate I wish you the best and have always enjoyed your posts even when you get a bit grumpy. I have learned a lot.

You actually remind me of my Dad who struggled a bit at times to tolerate certain types of people and wasn’t shy in letting them know when they annoyed him :D

    Cheers Legend

He regained his weight and strength by tossing 80-pound bales of hay daily on a cattle ranch till he had regained his fighting weight and physique. On February 8, 1966, Williams received a standing ovation from the Houston crowd as he returned to the ring, and knocked out Ben Black in the first round.[4]

Williams competed for the heavyweight championship against Muhammad Ali on November 14, 1966, but was badly outclassed, and was knocked down twice in the third round ending the match. Williams retired from boxing after the 1966 Championship defeat, but later made a comeback. Although able to defeat journeymen fighters, he suffered several knockout losses before retiring permanently in 1972.
He was so washed that he knocked Sonny Banks too?
I said that also Moore fought Besmanoff twice not Liston who fought Whitehurst twice!
Not to mention that Chuvalo,Ali,Foster and Moore did better to Besmanoff than Liston!
    Archie Moore,Harold and some
Joey Rowan (24-6-0) did better against Whitehurst than Liston also!
So Williams was shoot at age 30 years old but Satterfield who had double more fights and only had looses before Williams was not shot? That best version of Satterfield only beat aged Valdes!Prime Sattefield was year before Williams fight and he was washed from so many bouts! And he was again a LHW for god sake!

Psst! I've got a secret for you, it's as hidden as the ark of the covenant, Rocky Marciano would lose in head to head matchups with:

    Muhammed Ali
    Joe Louis
    Larry Holmes
    Lennox Lewis
    Sonny Liston
    George Foreman
    Mike Tyson
    Joe Frazier
    Tyson Fury
    one or both Klitschko's
    and probably to EvanderHolyfield ,Dempsey'
    and a prime Ezzard Charles.

    ….just keep this between us.

3.In a rematch in April of 1955 in St. Louis, Liston knocked out Marshall. He retired about a year after the third match, a 10-round decision for Liston on March, 6, 1956, in Pittsburgh!Born: 1923-12-24 so Marshall was 32 and 33 in their fights washed from fighting and you lied about ages again caught!
4.Walcott beat Louis in their first bout and that was robbery and you know that!
5.Louis was washed? He beat Savold,Bivins,Walcott in their second bout and lost to Ezz by decision? Was he washed?Liston at that age Lost by horrible KOs!So how Louis was washed!
6.His final record stands at 50-17-3 (34 KO), and was undefeated his first 17 fights. Before Layne's career declined in the mid-1950s, boxing historian Nat Fleischer wrote of the boxer, "Layne looms as the outstanding prospect west of the Mississippi. He is a hard hitter... Layne has what it takes to be developed into the next world heavyweight king. He can hit and has an abundance of courage."[2]

On July 12, 1951, he lost by 6th round KO to Rocky Marciano. Marciano's knockout punch sheared off four of Layne's upper, front teeth at the gumline and sent his mouthpiece bouncing with teeth included out of the ring.

Heavyweight Action ranked Rex Layne as the 11th best heavyweight boxer of the decade of the 1950s, with the top 3 spots held by Marciano, Walcott and Charles.
Layne was fighting also at 200lbs and was a big man, biger than Rocky!
7.Well I did not see that! Also in Rocky postgiht interview he looked fine unlike Louis!
Joe Louis 214 lbs lost to Rocky Marciano 184 lbs by TKO in round 8 of 10
    • Louis was a 6 to 5 betting favorite.
    • Louis was knocked down by a left hook in the eighth round. He got to one knee at the count of three and took an eight-count before getting up. Marciano moved in for the kill and ended the fight with a right that sent Louis through the ropes and onto the ring apron.

Muhammad Ali?Frazier and Bonavena are not at Rocky level and Frazier beat Ali!Check what Ali said about Marciano!
Rocky beat Joe Louis who said himself he would not beat Rocky even in his prime!
Larry Holmes maybe but Rocky was also better than Frazier and Tyson and Frazier used to brake Holmes ribs in sparing!
Lennox was knocked by Rahman and McCall and Marciano is much better than them!
Sonny Liston?Knocked by bum, beaten by Ali twice and Martin knocked him very bad!Did anyone of them had stamina, chin, heart and power of Marciano?
    Foreman could beat Rocky!
Tyson??Cmon glass chin and weak stamina Douglas proved that and he was not Rocky!
Frazier??Watch what Ali said about Rocky that he would even at 46 years old beat Frazier who was poor version of Marciano!Rocky is better than Bonavena for sure!Foreman picked Marciano over Frazier and Tyson also!Foreman said unlike Frazier he hit harder and use both hadns!
Klitchko?Byrd also poor version of Rocky split Klitchko nose and beat him and Byrd is not Marciano!
Evander was good and fight could go either way but Dempsey?Rocky would wear him down!
Rocky fought prime Ezzard only two years older than Rocky!

Sorry to hear it, McVey, but I understand. You've been toiling in these fields for a lot longer than I have and with a lot more intensity. Have a great vacation. Hope to hear from you, at least occasionally after you return. Who knows, someday you might decide to make a triumphant comeback!
